A 20-second excerpt of my life last Saturday.

Setting: Sitting on black leather sofa in purple television room. The curtains are closed and the setting is dark. The Chiefs game is on and there's about two minutes left in the game. A partially full Dr. Pepper sits on a glass table.

[Thought monologue.]

Okay, this is bad. This is really bad. But they can still win. They've still got a decent chance to win. All they need is to stop the blue team here and get a field goal. We've got Butker. Butker is great.

They're running. I expected that. That big robot guy is getting the ball. Stop him, guys.

Oh, good job, Peters. Way to knife through the line and -

Wait.

What's happening?

Something's happening.

[Voice monologue]

OH MY GOD!

DJ'S GOT THE BALL! DJ'S GOT THE BALL!

GO! GO! RUN, YOU MAGNIFICENT SON OF A GUN! OH MY GOD! THERE'S NO ONE CATCHING HIM!

[Leaping off couch, unintelligible screaming]

[Thought monologue.]

IT'S HAPPENING! IT'S REALLY HAPPENING! GRBAC TO RISON! VANOVER PUNT RETURN! IT'S HAPPENING!

HE'S IN THE END ZONE! I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD! IT'S REAL! IT HAPPENED! LIGHTNING! THE HAND OF GOD JUST TOUCHED US! THE CURSE IS OVER! IT'S OVER! ALL THE TRIALS ARE MELTING AWAY! I CAN SEE THE PROMISED LAND! DESTINY IS OURS! THIS IS A PLAY FOR THE AGES! I WILL REMEMBER THIS MOMENT ...FOREVER!

Hmm. Why is everyone looking back at the line of scrimmage?

That was the most spectacularly cruel Chiefs playoff moment possible. It blew away the field goal misses. It blew away the blown leads. I cannot imagine anything going forward that could possibly match that moment for its sheer and utter vivisection of my soul and spirit. But I'm sure something will happen next year that's worse.

Now imagine being at the stadium. Nobody knew there was even anything at all to review for a good solid minute. Pandemonium in the stands. It was such a great moment I'm not sure I would even take it away now, even knowing how it came crashing down seconds later.

I was watching with 3 friends that are kind of chiefs fans. They all went nuts jumping up and down and cheering as I stood there with my arms crossed with a dead look on my face. I didn't think for a second that it was a TD. I've been conditioned by this team over the last 25 years. It was still soul crushing nevertheless.

My heart just sank again. This is the kind of hurt that will never truly go away. Will just get replaced with the next hurt. Would read again. And again.

I think this completely appropriate and second the motion.

Concur. May that name never be mentioned on Erminesplanet again.

It's only made better because he retired the next day. He probably considered retiring after the regular season but God spoke to him in a dream and urged him to ref just one more game to strike the Chiefs down with no mercy.
