When you set up 8 new settlements you get different quests.
Well, it was the main storyline that put me on bad terms with the Bortherhood. So essentially I didn't miss anything there. I'm going through the main storyline...just with a different faction.

And as for the minutemen, I'm way past 8 settlements, and yeah, Preston does give you something new....but it's just a mission to go clear another potential settlement.

Eventually you should get the quest to defend the castle. Did you complete the quest to repair the castle?

I have for Brotherhood/Institute. Apparently when I side with the Brotherhood by offing some Institute punk I will get the extended Minutemen stuff.

Good thought. I've been doing many separate saves as well, for the same reason.
