Life Is it wrong to leave a job after one week for a better job?

Here is the set up: I have been out of work for 9 months and landed a 6 month contract job for a major financial firm at $28 per hour. I am very grateful for the job and I like the project.

I just received an offer for 12-18 months at $40 with possibility of full time within 8 months for another major financial company.

I have 5 kids and being unemployed trashed my finances. I want to do the right thing, be professional, etc. I really hate to ditch out on a project the current job is way behind on but I've only been there week.

Thoughts?

You have to do what's best for your family.

More money and what appears to be more security wins out.

I'd be honest with your current employer. They are more than welcome to match the offer and keep you.

Nothing wrong with going for the better job. It works the other way, too. A friend of mine left his company for another and worked there three days when they let him go. They didn't get a project they thought was a sure thing.

Just tell them that you had family issues come up and give them your 2 weeks notice. That way it makes possible that you might be able to get hired on by them at a later time.

Yep. This is the correct answer. It sucks for the employer, but they can't expect you to pass up an opportunity like that.

Do whatever is best for you. If the current project is something that keeps you engaged, then maybe taking the higher paying job on a project that doesn't thrill you isn't the exact answer.

As I've found out, more money doesn't always make up for a bad job situation.

Do what's best for you and your family, but try the best you can to not burn any bridges along the way.

Also, out of curiosity, what skillset and/or education did you receive to be in a position to land these jobs? What do you do at these companies? I'm currently trying to be a standup comedian, but you know how that goes. It's my dream, but I need something to fall back on.
