You have to do what's best for your family.
More money and what appears to be more security wins out. I'd be honest with your current employer. They are more than welcome to match the offer and keep you. |

Gotta look out for you. Is there someone you can refer to your current employers that can help them out when you quit?

Nothing wrong with going for the better job. It works the other way, too. A friend of mine left his company for another and worked there three days when they let him go. They didn't get a project they thought was a sure thing.

Is the company going to care about your problems when they decide they don't want you around anymore?

Just tell them that you had family issues come up and give them your 2 weeks notice. That way it makes possible that you might be able to get hired on by them at a later time.

Yep. This is the correct answer. It sucks for the employer, but they can't expect you to pass up an opportunity like that.

Do whatever is best for you. If the current project is something that keeps you engaged, then maybe taking the higher paying job on a project that doesn't thrill you isn't the exact answer.
As I've found out, more money doesn't always make up for a bad job situation.

Also, out of curiosity, what skillset and/or education did you receive to be in a position to land these jobs? What do you do at these companies? I'm currently trying to be a standup comedian, but you know how that goes. It's my dream, but I need something to fall back on. |
