What we do know is that Dorsey could have gave him less a year ago and we would have him wrapped up for the next 3-4 years.

Major mistake.
Because of hindsight we know that. If Houston were to have gotten injured or had a bad season then it would have been what a tool Dorsey is for signing him early.

Injuries happen.

We all knew that Houston is a stud. It should have been taken care of.

You have none. What leverage could Houston have used to sign a good deal (for him) last year. If he signed a deal last year, it would have been very team friendly. Any smart player and agent would have done the same (played 2014 out without a contract and go into 2015 either franchise tagged or signing an even larger deal).

A long term contract would clearly have cost less before he challenged the NFL sack record.

We don't know how much he was asking for before/during the season but it's obviously more now...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Of ****ing course. Shit, signing Poe now will be cheaper than if we wait until his rookie deal is over. But once again, it takes two to agree to a deal, and players don't have a ton of leverage negotiating before free agency. That's why they usually wait until their rookie deals are over and they're about to enter free agency to sign a LTD. If you're elite or close to elite, unless the team is throwing a boat load of money at you, there's no reason to sign a contract before you're a free agent.

Matthews is the highest paid 3-4 OLB making $13.2 million yr. Watt's avg yearly income is $16.6 million. Robert Quinn's is $14.25 avg.

I would give Houston a $15.5 million avg yearly salary and it give him $20 million gauranteed.
I like how Houston set up Watt's contract and I hope we copy it.
Watt is making $21.96 million this year, BUT his remaining years are as follows:

'16-$12.5 million
'17-$12.5 million
'18-$13 million
'19-$13 million
'20-$15 million
'21-$17.5 million

4 years after his large cap number for the 2015 season he's making less than Clay Mathhews avg.

It's worth paying this guy one year of franchise QB money when you look at those circumstances.

Yep. I would easily give him that and not think twice about it.

Cut Bowe, Daniels, DeVito and redo Tamba's contract and pay him that big money this year. Just get it done and out of the way so you have room for Poe I the next year or two.
