For us wine drinkers, I'm curious about your favorite "drinking" wine (as in, something uner $15 a bottle).

I'm partial to the 2002 Hill of Gold Shiraz (Rosemont Estates) and the 2002 Coppola Premium Claret. Right now, I'm drinking a 2003 Coppola Zin.

Sully does that, problem is she is getting used to being held and being on her belly, so she cries when I lay her down in the crib... although everyone says she's too young to form that kind of habit

They can definitely get dependent on that chest to sleep on. That started happening with our youngest. He's still not a good sleeper (our older son sleeps like crazy), but he sleeps through the night just about every other night, now, at 1 year old. We ended up having him sleep on his belly before we were supposed to, even though it increases risk of SIDs. He just wouldn't sleep on his back and layed there and cried. I'm not recommending it, though, but it was a choice we ended up making.

Speaking of wine deals I ran into a store that bought out some wine auction place. Bought wine for 8.99 that retailed for 26.99 this week. Great stuff.

Beaujolais Nouveau is 'soda pop', it's grape juice that's just barely fermented (and often doctored w/sugars) and was VERY popular for a decade or so, not only here but in Japan. It's more of a marketing ploy than a good wine, tho, so they can make vinegar from it and I don't mind. I'll buy Tete B-N, but I pass on all the rest.
If you want to try Beaujolais to see if you like it, look for Jadot Beaujolais-Villages (which indicates it's No. 2 on the Drink Mo' Bettah Booj scale, the better stuff costs about double), Jadot is my fave negotiant but I like Debouef and Tete when I can find 'em. KC no longer has a Georges Debouef distributor since they had a falling out with Berbiglea. Estupido! I ain't driving very danged far for Beaujolais X when Beaujolais Z is right here and plenty tasty.

Sweet wines...Missoo produces a very slurpable sweet red from the St. James winery, St. James Red Velvet. And don't forget good old Lambrusco, it's not fancy but fancy sweet wines are spendy. My dad has no interest in dry wines, Doc wants him to drink red wine so I put him on to these. Don't be afraid to make your own wine-coolers with these if you don't really like dry wines. Half a glass of 'Blackberry smash', a squeeze of lemon and top it with 7-up, drink 1 a day for health, drink 5 to dance naked at Mardi Gras.

Sweet white wine...Hogue late harvest riesling is a goody. Good old WPLJ, White Port and Lemon Juice. Look up the song on YouTube, you'll find Frank Zappa's cover of this old New Orleans classic gives a pretty tasty recipe. I like California Chenin Blanc like Dry Creek. It's a 'dry' wine but with a lot of residual sugars in it. And look for California Moscato, light and sweet-ish. Most white zinfandels and the stuff sitting beside them (white merlots, etc...) are sweet rose's.

Wine in a box. I like Chateau de Pena/Cuvee de Pena. It's a Rhone blend sourced from the SW corner of France - almost Spain. This is the same stuff I used to buy in bottles, good w/grilled and roasted meat and game, garlicky foods. I find it at Lukas in KCMO, but not on the Kansas side.
I also like the Black Box wines and Banrock Station Chardonnay, the Hardy's Stamp of Australia Riesling (not really sweet) and Delicato Shiraz in boxes (Delicato changed names recently, look for Bota Box as their new label. Same juice as the Delicato in the bottle, but they didn't want to 'dilute' the brand name).

I buy Corbett Canyon Chardonnay and/or Pinot Grigio/Chenin Blanc and their Merlot in a box to cook with, and keep a flask of the white wine in the Fridge for sippin' in the summertime. Nothing fancy, but danged good juice for their cheap price. You won't feel bad about putting a few cups of dry wine into your soup pot, or marinating a steak in $.35 worth of wine instead of opening a $15 bottle. Wine-in-a-box technology is getting better all the time, look for more and better wines to appear in this format here in the states. In Australia they drink about 55% of their wine 'in cask' as they call this format. It stays fresh for months, it's cheaper to produce so you're getting the same juice in a 750 bottle for $8 or in a box for $3 for 750ml worth of a 3 liter box. Even I can do that kind of math. So far the best stuff seems to come from OZ and France, but I'm starting to see some decent white blends and red blends from Washington State in boxes, too. A lot of those WA boxes aren't being sold here yet...but they will, in time. I'm looking forward to Beaujolais-Villages in a box one of these days.

I look for corks to be obsoleted inside ten yrs. Wine companies are going to the alloy twist top, even half or so of the upper-tiered wine-makers.

one of the best $12-14 wines i ever discovered is Root:1

a Chilean cabernet....let it breathe a little, incredible depth for so little money...drinkable as hell too

lately i've been trying to expand my taste for white wines....never was a fan until trying pinot grigio, now i'm trying to figure out gerwurtaminer and reisling from Alsace...

took me years to get over the trauma of drinking my mom's boxed Chardonnay....holy crap that is nasty

also, a general good grape for little money is Malbec...lots of them from argentina under $15 that are very good drinkable wines...

From the same winery, Trapiche Broquel is easily one of my favorites. It's a little more expensive than the Oak Cask but can still be found around 15 or less if on sale.
