HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

Renly looks more like I had envisioned him in the little bit of season 2 stuff that I've seen so far.

So far you have 5 people claiming the throne: [These are not spoilers, just reminding people who havent read the books where we are as we go into season 2]
Stannis Baratheon: The oldest of Robert's brothers, so given what we know about Joffrey being a bastard of Cersei and Jaime's incest (but only a few people on the show know it though several suspect it), Stannis is the rightful heir to Robert. Renly Baratheon: Youngest brother of Robert and Stannis, not the rightful heir, but thinks Stannis is more of a fighter than a king, so Renly makes a claim to the throne. Renly is more popular and charismatic than Stannis and has the support of the powerful Tyrell family (second only to the Lannisters in Westeros) because of his ties to Loras Tyrell (the knight Renly has a hidden gay relationship with). Joffrey Baratheon: Thought by most of Westeros to be the true heir to Robert since he is Robert's oldest son, but of course we know he is not Robert's son at all, and is really a Lannister bastard, so his claim is not true. Plus he's an evil, sadistic, spoiled punk. On the other hand, right now he actually holds the Iron Throne. Robb Stark: Ned's son, recently named the King in the North. He is only claiming the north, not the iron throne over all of Westeros, but in the end he will have to defeat the Lannisters and take over all of Westeros if he wants to remain king because the Lannisters are not going to just let him have the north. Dany: Dany probably has the best claim to the throne, but of course she is not even in Westeros and has lost her Dothraki husband Drogo and the Dothraki army she hoped to use to take over Westeros. On the other hand, she has just "given birth" to three dragons as season 1 ended, which are the first dragons to exist in the last 100+ years. Here is some more background info that will be relevant heading into season 2. There are no key plot spoilers, but I am talking about some new characters that are being introduced this season, so I will spoiler tag it for those who don't want to hear any info like that:
Spoiler!

For those who can't take the time to read the books or the extended summaries, here is a condensed version of the series up through book Dance with Dragons:
Damn near everyone dies.

I disagree, the book gives great depth, but the events of GoT are best unfolded on screen and unspoiled.
Watch the season, then go back and savor the details of the books.

Impossible to claim unless you have the ability to give yourself temporary, selective amnesia.

I went ahead and read all the books then I'm hoping for the TV to point out details I missed. Those damn books are chock-full of details and double entendres and portents and coded meanings, I know I missed many. GRR does a great job of "showing not telling" but wow is there a lot of showing.

To me, personally, the shock of the Bran incident was much stronger in the book because it seemed like he was going to be a major, major character at the time. On film, however, he was just one of Lord Stark's kids... Just a single example of why I would recommend the books first.

I have never read the books, but it seems this is the type of movie that is suited to your suggestion.
