Godzilla stomping back to theaters

Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary

By Ace Fernandez
Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape.

Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project.

The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year.

But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences.

The new film is shooting for a 2012 release.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known."

The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday.

Haha..no doubt. In case anyone is interested, Netflix has quite a few of the old Godzilla films streaming this month.

Yeah, I will definitely NOT get on that right away. If for no other reason than my kids may lose all respect for me...

I remember in the early 70's the local drive-in was having a monster marathon and mom agreed to take me a little bro and as I recall the movies were

Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster
Son of Godzilla
Destroy All Monsters
All Monsters Attack

Of course I was such a monster fanatic I never missed a tv episode of Ultra Man or Jonny Sokko and his Flying Robot either.

I never saw any in the theaters. I saw them all on Channel 56's "Creature Double Feature", which was every Saturday. Basically, the cartoons ended and then the Creature Double Feature began. Brilliant timing by them.

Ok, this is a crazy long shot, but I've seen crazier on here, so why not...

There was a movie on the creature double feature once -- it was about a scientist who somehow helped bring a creature that was from another planet or something to earth. He, of course, thought it would be a good idea. He helps protect the creature, which as best I can recall is living in a cave of some sort. It was about the size of a human, and my memory (very vague) wants to make it very roughly bat-like.

It turns out (surprise!) that the creature is evil in some way, and ultimately the idiot who brought him to earth has to kill it. My memory is that that guy and the creature fight it out and both die. Or something.

Based on that pathetic description, does anyone have any idea what movie this might be? It made an impression on my young mind, and every once in a while I wonder what the movie was. 35 or whatever years later, an inquiring mind wants to know.

Wow, ok, never mind.

I first found a list of every movie that was ever on the Creature Double Feature.

http://issuu.com/ryewhiskeyjoe/docs/...ure_movie_list

I'm looking through this ridiculous wall of text, wondering how I'm going to figure it out, and then ZONTAR, THE THING FROM VENUS leaps off the page and assaults my eyeballs.

I then find a description online, and, of course, the full move.

https://archive.org/details/ZontarTh...mVenusrestored

Yep, that's it. The Internet amazes once again. Ridiculous.

I havent seen this one in years. But it must be hilariously awful. They showed this hilarious scene from it before my showing at the Alamo Drafthouse. Basically these people in a Japanese club that gets attacked by an oil slick. It was horribly trippy and psychedelic. Obviously a product of its era. Pretty funny stuff.

I've been re-watching the full catalog. There's a lot of fun memories getting pulled out of the mental storage closet.

The director (Banno) loved his movie, and has been trying to get a sequel made ever since.

Other than the ending, it sounds like a plot ripoff of My Fair Lady. Was he teaching the creature to function in high society?
