Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/15

Sep 15, 2006, 2:31:34 PM

Q: How are you feeling going into Denver where the Chiefs haven’t won in some time?

HERMAN EDWARDS: “Lots of teams haven’t won there. I feel OK. I think it’s a good test for us, I really do. I said that when the season started. I thought we were going to play two playoff teams, one at home and one on the road (opening the season). This is a division game and it’s going to be a fight. We have to be prepared to do that and not get behind early. That’s what happens when you go on the road. When you get behind early you find yourself in a bad way and that’s the last place you want to get behind early. That’s got to be our mindset.

“The great thing is the guys know the situation. The situation is we need to win a game before we go to a bye. Tough place to play in, a division opponent, a place where we haven’t won before, so that only makes it bigger.”

Q: Can you win on emotion alone knowing that Trent Green is out?

EDWARDS: “That helps you but you’ve got to execute and be disciplined on offense and defense. The thing you realize when you go on the road is you don’t want to be down in the first quarter, you don’t want to be down points. Then you’re fighting up hill.

“Now, maybe three points, but you don’t want to be down 10 points or so because that’s not a good mix.”

Q: How confident are you with Damon Huard at QB right now?

EDWARDS: “I feel good with Damon. He’s been a guy that’s been in that role. We’ll do some things that help him and we’ve got to make sure he manages the game in a way where he doesn’t turn the ball over. That’s the whole key: don’t turn the ball over on the road. I think he’s prepared to do that. I think the guys have done a good job of practicing football. We haven’t mentioned it a whole lot. I don’t mention who’s hurt or who’s not going to play, even at the quarterback position. I think they know what Damon’s capable of doing and now we’ve to go execute.”

Q: Do you simplify things a little bit?

EDWARDS: “You just do things that are his strong suit. That’s what you try to do and coaching has done a good job of emphasizing things that we think he can do very, very well.”

Q: I’ve always felt that teams have real good home field advantages themselves always find it a tougher time on the road because they have such a comfort zone at home.

EDWARDS: “That’s a little bit true, that is. I think the more people talk about it the more subconsciously (it affects you.) You can’t do that. You’ve got to go play. It’s still a football field, the yards are the same, the quarters are the same. To me, it’s getting off to a good start on both sides of the ball. That’s the key. Not falling behind, not allowing a long drive or a big score to get the crowd into the game.”

Q: What you said on Tuesday where the offense has to change. Are you saying that because the same components aren’t here?

EDWARDS: “You want to be successful and want to win and we didn’t produce enough points (vs. Cincinnati) at home. That’s a little bothersome. Now, some things happened like we turned the ball over, but we’ve got to be a team that when we get an opportunity to score we’ve got to score.

“Now, as far as the components, that’s been the system here. That’s OK, but sometimes you have to tweak the system a little bit. If we have to do that, then that’s what we have to do. We’ve got to do it at this point, and from here on out make sure the right players are involved in what we want to do, and we must protect the quarterback.”

Q: Do you hope to get Larry Johnson more than 17 carries this week?

EDWARDS: “We’d like to, but we got into one of those games where we had to throw because we were down, and the clock was running down and the other team was doing what you want to do: run the ball. He’s got to be a big part of this offense and he actually got a lot of yards on passes this past week.”

Q: How about Kevin Sampson’s role this week?

EDWARDS: “He’s gonna start. He’s been in that role before, so it’s not like it’s unfamiliar to him.”

Q: How many quarterbacks did you use last year in New York? How many ended up starting for you?

EDWARDS: “Four of them did. Kingsbury played but didn’t start and we had 16 guys on IR (injured reserve).

Q: Who’s your third quarterback this week?

EDWARDS: “Dee Brown. We’ll run the option. Denver only has two (QB’s) too.”

Q: Do you show Huard or study what he when he started before in ‘99?

EDWARDS: “Nah.”

Q: What do you think are his strong points?

EDWARDS: “One of the stronger points is he’s been in this situation. He knows the offense. He has some throws that he throws very, very well and that’s what we’ve got to make he’s doing when he does throw it.”
