The new CBA gives a $1.5 million dollar cap exemption for any player that’s been with his current team for 4 years or more.
Sherman costs zero agains the Chiefs cap. |

Sure, but if it's not Sherman that exception could be used for someone else. It doesnt just go unused if we dont resign Sherman. So the opportunity cost is the same. For instance instead of using it on sherman, who hopefully isnt signing a contract worth double what he made last year, we could use that exception to reduce the cap hit of fisher or kelce or colquitt.

To add an incentive for keeping rosters in tact...too many players switching teams waters down the product.
