If you have an air compressor - simply blow out the vent slots on both sides, this will 'free up' the fan, often dust and debris will lock these up.

I bet this will solve your issue.

Thanks SR. I tried that with my dad's minicompressor before I took it apart. There was nothing obstructing or a dust issue.

Dang, well ok, this happens to us from time to time - w/ the Thinkpads, but they always self correct after I do that.

Did you try uninstalling the System monitor app and then running Coretemp.

You could also try Realtemp - http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ or Speedfan - http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php both work well.
