TV Programming Fads

Throughout TV history, there have been some strong programming patterns. The following are examples:

1. 1950s - Light, warm family comedies (Father Knows Best, Leave It to Beaver, Make Room for Daddy, etc.)

2. 1950s - 1960s - One-hour western dramas (Bonanza, The Big Valley, Gunsmoke, etc.)

3. Early 1960s - Space comedies (My Favorite Martian, I Dream of Jeannie, etc.)

4. Mid-1960s - Hillbilly sitcoms (Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, etc.)

5. Early 1970s - Detective shows (Mannix, Cannon, Hawaii Five-O, etc.)

6. Early 1970s - "Professional worker" comedies (Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Doc, etc.)

7. Late 1970s - "Jiggle" shows (Three's Company, Charlie's Angels, etc.)

8. 1980s - Prime Time Rich Soaps (Dallas, Dynasty, Knott's Landing, etc.)

9. 2000s - Reality shows (Survivor, The Great Race, Fear Factor, etc.)

I have two questions.

A. What past fads are missing on this list?

B. What do you think will be some future fads?

Future shows will become similar to The Running Man, I believe.

In the future, and maybe not so far off future- I forsee interactive capability with TV shows where the audience can and will determine the scenes in a murder mystery or family drama or a slap-stick comedy or even a variety show, thus combining the sitcom and the reality TV shows into one explosive interactive show. The viewers will have a chance to win prizes, but the only way to do so is to vote and be an interactive member of the TV show. Each week, someone across the country wins a significant prize until the final week of the show where the prize is of course- the ultimate million dollar prize! Imagine- just one show- and you've incorporated ALL of the TV show formats into one.

I know there's always been a spin-off here and there but in the last 10 years it's gotten out of hand.If not mistaken Law & Order and CSI now have 7-8 hours of shows and those are only the ones I know of for sure.

I was just going to say cop/detective/law shows for the 90's, 00's.

yeah, there sure is a ton of prime time programming devoted to those two groups of related shows...

the only ones that i consistently watch out of all those shows are special victims unit and trial by jury...

that egomaniac d'onofrio in criminal intent doesn't do anything for me at all and the orginal law and order seems stale these days...

i'm not real enthused about any of the csi shows...

but i sure do like 24 and it's coming on soon...

Spin offs IMO only work if the storylines kind of play out together, sort of like Knotts Landing and Dallas in the 80's.
