Massive explosion at Texas Fertilizer Plant

This apparently has just happened in the last hour... but a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas... near Waco, has exploded. Apparently it was felt up to 60 miles away. Some of the pictures rolling in on Twitter are insane. Looks like a volcano. Sounds like multiple buildings leveled, on fire, etc.

Ha!

They're way ballsier than me. I don't even like to put the shit in the dirt. Much less, put it in some consumer container that isn't made for the epic freaking cold that comes out.

I've heard of people putting it in Thermoses. If it were me, I'd go find alternative product to make meth.

I put some on this spring and plugged up my coulter machine. It has a cold flow system that bleeds off some vapor. Anyway, there was no wind and I got a little bit too big of a whiff of it and threw up. Maybe I'm a big pussy, but that was a lot less exposure than having it in a ****ing cooler in my back seat.

I have no idea how these jackasses don't eradicate themselves.

As soon as it explodes the kid cries that (s)he can't hear and to please get them out of there. The dad is asking if the kid(s) are ok. People were giving the dad shit, but it hard to say he should have known there was about to be a nuclear-like explosion.

I don't know how one would handle a rupture in a very large tank. Out here, you just get the **** upwind and let it dissipate in the wind, but that is a far smaller volume than a bulk tank. That's scary shit.
Unless you inhale anhydrous ammonia vapor, its not going to kill you.

Like you said just get away from it and you will be OK. The liquid is the only real danger.

I have worked in plants for 20+ years with VERY large ammonia refrigeration systems. The stuff is nasty but very avoidable unless you are working on the equipment.

It will give a massive headache though. You can also build a tolerance to it. Strange stuff.

You're right, the liquid is far more dangerous, but I have no idea what a large quantity released into the air would do. It sounds like there was only 55,000 pounds of the shit there.

I also read a report that the ammonia threat is non-issue now.

I would speculate that the heat from the blaze set off the initial explosion, which is what you see on the left. Then that set something else off in the center.
