Frazier may not be secured yet

Leslie Frazier

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is being mentioned as a potential candidate for another head-coaching job, this time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Just when it seemed that the Vikings had dodged a bullet concerning Leslie Frazier getting a head coaching position elsewhere, his name has surfaced again – this time with Kansas City’s head coaching vacancy.

Although the local K.C. media has been fawning over Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, Frazier’s name has been mentioned as a possibility as well. Frazier, who has made the rounds as a potential head-coaching prospect, was viewed as a frontrunner for a couple of coaching openings last winter as well as earlier this month.

Last year, he interviewed with the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons. This year, Frazier interviewed with the Detroit Lions and was considered the runner-up after interviews with the Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams. All three of those positions have been filled, but Kansas City still hasn’t named its head coach.

The Chiefs waited to bring the hammer down on head coach Herm Edwards until last weekend, which seemed a little late considering that the college all-star games are typically attended by head coaches – much less the time that is required to gather a staff of assistants. By waiting so long, many of the available coaches that were either part of other organizational coaching purges or waiting to latch on with a new regime have already been signed.

It would seem clear that the Chiefs are going to wait until after the Super Bowl to make a decision, which would lend itself to the local interest in all things Haley. But expect to hear in the coming days that Frazier may be in line to interview for the position.

Just when we thought it was safe to say that Frazier will be back with the Vikings in

Just guessing here but top 15 overall. To lazy to look it up but the run d was probably top ten with the willams boys at the DT spots. I'm sure Allen helped with the pass D. He ran a version of Cover 2 but they had balance at all three levels ( DL LB DB ). Like Rivera though he would have experience in the Philly D and the 46 as a player. Rivera has the 34 in SD that bumps him over the top in that matter. But he did take over for Tomlin so that probably has as much to do with the C2 they ran with tomlin coming in from TB and Kiffin SR.

seems to me like frazier with the vikings Defense is similar to Haley with Arizona's offense

with that defensive line you better be decent

Jared Allen
Ray Edwards
Pat Williams
Kevin williams

although they did have several injuries to deal with

Michale Boulware
Udeze
EJ Henderson

Yep, getting Chad Greenway back healthy at LB helped. Ben Leber the SLB doesn't seem like a prototype Cover 2 OLB but he made it work with big LB's in a C2. Also picked up Nap Harris and he started right away.

I thought Gunther put in thomas to try and motivate Harris. But that lasted too long, it started in OTA's/Mini Camp and Harris never got it back. Then all the sudden Demmorrio Williams doesn't get his chance and he was throwing Wes Dacus out there before we signed Boiman. Even Donnie Edwards was in the dog house in the offseason. I just look at it and it seemed Gun nit picked every thing they did from the whole getting back to basics thing. I could ramble more but i'm just glad the SOB is gone.

Same here, seems like our secondary, corners especially, played pretty well under Herm, but not the other positions.

Pretty good Interview from Bowles with the Lions. He had 2 visits with them i think this is the first one.

Todd Bowles says he's the guy to fix 0-16 Lions
BY NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • January 14, 2009

Why does Todd Bowles believe he can turn around the Lions?

"Well, I've done it before," said Bowles, Miami's assistant head coach and secondary coach, during his second interview for the Lions' coaching job Tuesday.

Bowles joined the Dolphins last year. He helped them go from 1-15 to 11-5. As a Cleveland assistant earlier, he helped the Browns go from 3-13 to 7-9 to 9-7.

"Of course Detroit, 0-16 -- that's a challenge within itself," Bowles said. "We all know the challenges that lie ahead with an 0-16 team. ... I think I bring insight and blueprint to turn it around."

Bowles is the second candidate the Lions have introduced.

As Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz did during his second interview Monday, Bowles spoke to Detroit reporters on the same podium where Lions coaches have held weekly news conferences.

President Tom Lewand observed for the second straight day, but general manager Martin Mayhew was not present. He was scouting East-West Shrine Game practices in Houston.

San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera will have his first interview with the Lions today at a remote location. That is believed to be in Houston with Mayhew.

Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier reportedly will have a second interview with the Lions this week.

Bowles played eight seasons in the NFL, three in the same secondary with Mayhew in Washington.

"We played together for three years, but that was back in the late '80s, early '90s," Bowles said. "We would keep in touch maybe once or twice a year maybe."

Bowles spent 1995-96 in Green Bay's personnel department under GM Ron Wolf. After three years of college coaching, he became the New York Jets' secondary coach in 2000.

It was his first of three stops with coach/executive Bill Parcells. He worked under Parcells with Dallas in 2005-07 and with Miami.

"From the time I got to the Jets, he told me I'd be a head coach in this league, and he taught me accordingly," Bowles said. "I mean, he kept me by his side. He taught me step-by-step the structure of how to put a team in place and keep a team in place and not be a one-hit wonder. ...

"Parcells has taught me more about, from the first guy on the roster to the last guy on the roster, how he fits in the system, why he fits in the system, why we want him on this team, why we do not want him on this team, and he taught me how to learn players."

Bowles, 45, a self-described stickler for details, interviewed for Dallas' coaching job last year and Denver's this year. He said he is scheduled to interview with St. Louis this week, but added: "This is the only job I want."

His offensive philosophy is similar to Schwartz's: run first. He would prefer a 3-4 defense, but if his personnel doesn't fit that right away, he would run a 4-3 or a hybrid version. The Lions have run a 4-3.

Bowles doesn't think the NFL's first 0-16 season means the Lions' talent is terrible.

"No, it's not that bad," Bowles said. "When we were in Miami, you can't gut 53 players on the roster and draft 53 new ones. You have solid, foundation-type football players here. You have to weed out the bad ones. You have to make the other ones buy into the organization. You as a coach have to understand between the personnel part and the team part. You have to bring those two together as far as finding the right player."

One of his main tasks would be to change the mentality in Detroit.

"Emotionally, you have to make them forget about 1-15 or 0-16," Bowles said. "When we were in Miami last year, we were 1-15. What we brought to the players were, we're trying to win the AFC East.

"When you're 1-15, mentally you're damaged. I don't care how you slice it. Between the media, you losing every week, your neighbors calling you losers and everything, you're damaged mentally. You have to get past that mental part and you have to just get down and work, and you have to give them a goal to shoot for, and that's winning the NFC North."
