Arena Ball

Just got back from my first Arena Ball game. (Well, Arena Football2). The OK City Yard Dawgz and the Memphis Explorers. Pretty interesting game. Not to sure about the coach with a minute to go on the clock, but they won the game anyway. Dawgz are up by 3 (50-47) with a minute to go and have the ball thanks to an INT in the endzone. On the second carry they fumble and the explorers get the ball on the 5. They try to run the ball and get stuffed on the 2. Dawgz had 3 timouts and 50 seconds on the clock - plenty of time to get another TD. But they don't call the timeout. They let the clock run. The explorers run the ball a second time and get stopped just inside the 1. Time runs out while they are trying to get up.

Anyhow, another observation I made, It's alright for the Explorers WR to be 2, 3, and sometimes 4 yards beyond the LOS before the ball is snapped - happened all night - but the same was not alright for the Dawgz to do. On one particular play, the ball was on the 20 yard line - not to hard to see when the player crosses the big white line. Anyhow, he's at the 17 and bumps the DB as the ball is snapped and they called offsides. I tell the guy I'm with that the finally called it on them. But NOOOOOO! They call offsides on the DB that is sitting on the 17 yardline - 3 yards off the LOS when the ball is snapped.

Another observation is that fans are TERRIBLE at kickin FGs. The halftime show had a punt/pass/kick contest. There were 7-8 people that got to try for a FG from the 5 yard line. NONE of them kicked the ball high enough to clear the upright - only one got it to the back of the endzone. I told the wife that I guarantee that I would have had it high enough, left, right, or center is an entirely different matter, but it would have been high enough.

All in all it was pretty interesting. The field looks a lot smaller in person that it does on TV.

I'm looking forward to seeing them in KC in the next year or two, just to have something else to pay attention to for a few weeks/months after the NFL season is over.

Another thing $12 each got us midfield 2nd level seats. The ONLY problem I had with the seats is we were too high up for the cheerleaders to get the T-Shirts to us.

Yard Dawgz?

Wow. what a bizarre name for a sports franchise... Its like McMahon from WWF wrestling took over... the XFL was such a joke, and they didnt have names like Yard Dawgz, did they?

Eh, Barry Switzer owns the team. That might explain the name. Actually they played a lot of "Who let the Dogs Out" Maybe they named them that so they could play the song.

They had what looked to be an English Boxer on a leash in one endzone. I kept watching the dog thinking that sooner or later he'd mark the endzone or worse yet, put some fertilizer down.

Uhm, actually, they weren't exaclty fit for cheerleaders Keg. Let's put it this way, they could definately use more situps. So, maybe being further away wasn't such a bad thing.

Crap. That's only their second loss of the season.

My first AFL/af2 game was the Xplorers against the Quad City Steamwheelers a few weeks ago. I thought I was bad luck, but they came back from a late two-score deficit to send it to overtime, in which they scored and picked off a pass in the end zone to win.

That's just not normal... it's a crime against humanity and I now deduct 375 points from your ManCard. Now, grab a beer and go rent some classic "T&A movies" from the 80s.
