Short term medical insurance?

Howdy.

I got a new job, my last week of my current job is next week. My new jobs insurance won't kick until 1/1/07, so I have to find something to cover me until then (for my wife and I).

Any recommendations? I see alot of websites offering short term temporary insurance, but alot of them look kind of seedy. Has anyone here actually had experience in dealing with any of these companies? I'm looking for a castrophe-only plan...I don't want to be un-insured if I develop appendicitis.

I'm on Assurant right now (underwritten by Time). Doesn't seem too bad so far, but then again, I haven't developed cancer or any serious illnesses. A- rated, recommended from an insurance agent I know.

Try eHealthInsurance.com to compare their and other policies. I'd say as long as their financial rating is good and googling their name doesn't turn up any "Rainmaker" testimonials, you're golden.

Cobra can be damn expensive. When I switched jobs, my former employer would keep me on their insurance under Cobra for $1200 a month. We switched to my wife's until mine kicked in 3 months later.

Is COBRA that much now? Wow!

I'm self employed, so I'm self-insured. My medical insurance to cover me and the family is about $450/mos, with a huge assed deductible ($4K/yr). So, in real money, my medical expenses are about $950/mos.

fn sucks.

But you can't have a lapse in coverage. I would check with your insurance agent to see what might be available to cover you until the new benefits kick in.

COBRA is the way to go if you have any pre-existing conditions whatsoever.

This is not expensive at all. Compared to your current policy, maybe. But by no means is this expensive, especially if it offers the same coverage.

I think you will find that Fortis aka Assurant Health will have the best deal. State Farm agents sell it. We have our health insurance with them and they are fine. They actually have a policy just for your situation too.

I agree that $350 for cobra is a deal. When I left Turner I was paying that much JUST to cover my wife under COBRA while she went thru some additional underwriting.

My family policy (self insured) runs me about $350/month and we have a $3500 family deductable. After that everything is covered 100%
