Eric Berry

I've pondered back and forth on this for weeks now, but I think today sealed the deal for me on the Berry vs. Poe contract debate. I want Berry. It's not even that Poe is playing bad, he's actually playing really well. But Berry is too.

The Chiefs faced Greg Olsen today, who came into the game 8th in the entire NFL in receiving yards, and essentially shut him down. A large reason for that is Berry, and that's how it's been against tight ends for the last 2 years week in and week out.

Also, I think Berry helps the secondary out as a whole a lot. He keeps Peters locked in. He is undoubtedly the top leader in the locker room from what most of the players say. It is his attitude and demeanor that allows this team to stay focused and win a game like they did today. He is the glue to this defense, I believe.

Some say 'you can't pay a safety that much', or 'Berry isn't worth top end money', and in most cases you would be right, but I, at least right now, can't see any good reason not to pay Berry. In a day and age where the receiving tight end can be such a b*tch for teams to defend, we have the luxury of this guy, and you can't find that just anywhere.

Time will tell, but 29 has my vote right now.

See if Eric Berry can take what he did yesterday and revamp himself to be the player he once was. It's not like he just kicked cancer ass or anything that was less of a miracle.

So, today is probably NOT the day to assess long term contract plans as even I was enamoured with his play (and I generally think he's a bit over-rated). Gotta step back from the emotion and see how everything stacks up after the season.

I will admit that I think so far, this appears to be his most dominant year in the pro's. Gonna be hard to ignore that at season's end if that keeps up.

I believe Dane put his personal cap at something like 8M per. I suspect Berry's looking more in the range of 10M per. Gosh, I'd love to keep this guy, but damn, that's a lot of coin for a safety....even a very, very good safety.

Oh well, as I said, let's see how the season plays out, but right now, I'd probably be willing to drop a few more dollars into the Berry long term contract coffer.

Berry's beasting right now. Super glad we have him!
If memory serves, they were offering Berry something in the 10M per range. He wants something around 12M +. I don't want to lose him but it sounds unreasonable.

While I don't fault anyone for saying Poe, as he's very important and probably IS the one that should be kept, the whole 'Eric Berry isn't very good' is one of those memes that is almost exclusive to this site. It's been said about pretty much every player who's any good at some point. Hell, for years there was a crowd around here saying Poe was over-rated AFTER his all pro season.

Someone said it, and the parrots rolled in to repeat it. I think some folks around here just like being contrarian and shitting on quality players.

Not saying E Berry isn't a quality player. For the money you lose too much when trying to make room for both. What value are you truely gettin when you have to replace the 3-5 players you are proposing to cut? I hate to burst your bubble but he just isn't worth it. With Poe you keep a lot of pieces.

Given their age\positions, I'd wager Poe will play out his next contract at a high level of productivity over what Berry will be able to accomplish. That's not a knock on Berry, just an observation of elite DB's seemingly falling off that cliff around 29\30. Even Ed Reed struggled to stay on the field\remain consistent after 30. Woodson being the obvious outlier.

Factor in age, contract and years to losing poe and it is easier. I would love berry to retire here. But this is where it becomes a business decision. Do not handcuff the team later to possible dead money.
