The play developed slower than he anticipated. As he's said, it was a RPO and when he has his eyes away from the ball he can only assume. Not a good excuse, but that's what happened.

I hate when we call a timeout on defense on a big 3rd down. it almost never works, it gives them a chance to get the play they want instead of rushing against the play clock.
