If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Geno, EJ, maybe Barkley. We'll see how they pan out. They could also have tried to aquire picks in next years draft to make a move up the board if they see a guy there instead of using them on Alice. There were plenty of stop gaps out there to be had for next to nothing.. Palmer, Kolb, Flynn.

You said "the current model for winning SBs". That model doesnt consist of qbs outside of the 1st round. So were you going to spend the 1.1 on E.J?
If you didnt see anyone you thought had a chance of becoming anything would You use the picks we did to acquire a guy who you thought was going to have a Gannon like career? A late bloomer?
Because I think thats what Reid thinks he has done.
I hope hes either right or will cut his losses when it turns out thats not the cards hes holding.

I wish I could feel that way.

They are going to waste the end of the career of some of the teams best players. We have gone for decades without some of this kind of talent, that it took several drafts to get.

If they were to only waste two years on Alex sMith, how much of a factor will Flowers, DJ, Hali, Jamaal Charles, Bowe and even Berry be by the time another QB was ready if they drafted one?

This is probably one of the contributing factors to their decision to go recycled again.

I think he's capable of 3800 24 TDs and sub 10 picks.

For those of you that'll roll your eyes he was on pace for that last year in a RRPP offense. A bit less on the yardage side pace wise, but he's going to throw the ball more here.

He does that and this team can definately win 10-11 games.

He shits his pants, we move on.

Through the 8 games he played fully, he was on pace for 3,318 yards, 24 TDs, 10 INTs, 8 fumbles.

Cassel the season before the Chiefs traded for him had 3,693 yards, 21 TDs, 11 INTs, 5 fumbles.

There's a huge variable that Cassel was throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker, who at the time, were both top 5 WRs in this league.

A combination of business and football acumen.

The Chiefs need to be competitive, and you're not getting that with Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Matt Flynn, Geno Smith, or Matt Barkley. You're getting it from Alex Smith.

Build a team around him for a year, then see what you can do to get The Guy.
The only reason Alex Smith even became available from SF was because Colin Kaepernick turned out to be far more than the "solid backup" first thought. Once the 49ers got rid of Jimmy Raye as OC, Alex Smith became a very different QB. His rating went over 90 and his winning percentage took his team to the playoffs. Along the way he beat Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan in playoff level games...and he did it with lesser WR talent than he will have here this coming season.

He may prove to be only a one or two year stop gap but I would be very surprised if that were the case. He is a guy who can take a team deep into the playoffs, and I expect him to do just that.

I wouldn't worry about the numbers. Let the Fantasy Football geeks deal with that crap. It's all about being efficient and winning games. Gobs of yards are dazzling and all, but winning comes first.

Cool post... but for the bolded, Kaepernick was handpicked and traded up for. He was always gonna be the QBOTF in SF. Just crazy abilities with arm and legs. Alex bought into the BS Harbaugh was selling... Jim went far out of his way to kiss Alex's arse... only to stab him in the back with his true plan.

If Alex Smith was worth a shit as quarterback he wouldn't have been available to get for second round picks.
