To what extent do you embrace holidays?

The Easter menu thread made me self-reflective.

I barely even notice holidays. I don't know why. If my wife didn't do decorations and make special food, I would just order a pizza and hang out and never even notice that a holiday occurred.

It's not an anti-holiday stance, either. I'm just not big on traditions and stuff. It's pretty much true for every holiday - Christmas, 4th of July, Memorial Day, you name it. Other than buying some Christmas gifts, probably the biggest holiday thing I do is buy a bag of candy on Halloween in case anyone knocks on the door.

What do other people think? How do you celebrate holidays? Think about...

buying gifts
putting up decorations
engaging in traditions (Christmas Carols, buying fireworks, etc.)
making special meals
truly thinking about the holiday

How much enjoyment, effort, and engagement do you have with holidays?

I am kinda between the first two options—on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Though some Thanksgivings I go out to eat. Have done that with Easter until some family moved here. It's a way to keep tradition in my family and get them together. I decorate, plan including menus and have people over.

I don't do the Fourth of July though. That one I tend to take it easy and relax. Used to go to a friends bonfire where we could see the beach fireworks or go to beach to see them. Now I don't at all for certain reasons. I relax on labor day though. I did Halloween big when my kid was young. Fog machine, dressing up, monster burgers, eyeball punch and baked goods.

I love any holiday that means a paid day off of work. The rest are useless.

I never did them big until I had a child though. However, I always visited family who had the holiday meal, did some decorating at Christmas....such as a tree and went to office parties. I used to have my own area in an ad agency.

I celebrate the candy holidays - Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter - by eating a shit ton of candy. Other than that, Christmas is pretty much the only one we go all out on. We did zero, except candy, for Easter yesterday.

Don't really care for holidays. I have to celebrate them because the kids like it, but if I ha my way we would just ignore them. It's all about retailers making money anyway!

When my son was little, I LOVED Xmas. He'll be 17 this year so haven't cared about it much for a few yrs now.

It has been much easier, though because I just gave him money the last few years. What teenager doesn't like cash?

Actually, Xmas '13 I got him a new laptop.

I don't like holidays. Our house and vehicles always end up getting more cluttered.

I have children so I do holidays and dig the shit out of it. After they've grown...I don't know. But not the Hallmark holidays. Just the real ones.

My family is big on Thanksgiving and Easter...Christmas is great, but when I think of family get togethers, the best ones and the ones we put the most into are Thanksgiving and Easter.

Here's a little of our tradition...the Cork Shooting Contest.

Back when I was probably about 7 or so, we were sitting down to either Thanksgiving or Easter, can't remember which. My dad, to be funny, took the cork from the champagne bottle and put it in his mouth, then spit it out across the table, basically shooting the cork. We all thought that was hiliarious...and we've done it every holiday since. It's actually a source of bragging rights and a family tradition that we all look forward to. Some families play touch football...we spit champagne corks across the room...

I love those holidays, and look forward to them every year.
