After decades of fighting evil solo, Batman and Superman will finally be teaming up on the big screen, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder will direct the tentpole with Henry Cavill returning as Superman. It is unclear who will play Batman in the new film. A release date of 2015 has been set, with a Flash movie appearing in 2016 and a Justice League movie in 2017.

Snyder's Man of Steel, which rebooted the Superman franchise, has grossed north of $600 million worldwide since it hit theaters this June.

Warner Bros. is about to bring together two of its most iconic heroes: Superman and Batman will unite in a new film, the follow-up to “Man of Steel,” set for release in 2015.

According to two sources with knowledge of the movie, Warner Bros. intends to announce the news at its Comic-Con International panel Saturday morning. Said a Warner Bros. spokesperson, “We don’t comment on rumors regarding these properties.”

“Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder is expected to reunite with screenwriter David S. Goyer and star Henry Cavill for the new film. It’s unlikely Christian Bale will step back into the bat suit, as the actor has indicated publicly that he has moved on from his days as Bruce Wayne.

“Man of Steel” producer and “Dark Knight” trilogy director Christopher Nolan is expected by some to produce the project, but the exact nature of his involvement is unclear.

The move marks the culmination of years of effort on the part of Warner Bros. and DC Comics to bring their superheroes together in a similar fashion to their primary competitor Marvel, which successfully combined its superheroes into a $1.5-billion box-office hit with “The Avengers.”

In the comic world, the two heroes are teaming up in a new series, “Batman/Superman,” by writer Greg Pak and artist Jae Lee.

Supes is almost an unwinnable character. He was written as part Boy Scout, part Jesus. If you portray him that way, people hate it. If you give him a darker edge, people hate it. If you show him developing his personality (MoS), people hate it. What the **** do people want, really? Honestly, "MoS" and "Smallville" are the more realistic idea of what it would be like. Think about it: you, yourself, grow up pretty well, and suddenly find out you have the powers of a god. Would it really be that easy to suddenly become a do-gooding hero? I want a Superman movie that doesn't suck. They managed to do it twice before, with Christopher Reeve as Superman. They should be able to do it again. Instead, it looks right now as if they're trying to ruin two major characters in the same movie.

Exactly. He's representative of the basic problem that DC has always had; they tend to produce flat and simplistic characters, then liven them up through powers or gadgets, which doesn't make very interesting stories. You can see this even in one aspect of Batman, easily one of their most intriguing characters; instead of determining what kind of martial arts he studied, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of his abilities, determining how that affects the character and plot, and applying how all of that works on paper and on screen, at some point they just drew a line under "EXPERT IN ALL MARTIAL ARTS", which is not only ridiculous but boring.

This is why, when DC tried to hire Marvel to write their titles in the 80s, Marvel refused on the grounds that the characters are crap.

That may well be your opinion but there's a difference between cool and interesting.

The Hulk is cool as shit. He's not really intriguing, though.

Its a very safe bet to say he's by FAR the MOST intriguing character in any comic book series from either side... a do gooder billionaire with a very dark and twisted side who's exceptional only through his own relentless training and high tech gadgets.

Batman is the KING of the superhero pantheon IMO.

Not really.

Marvel has done a good job of balancing powers and weaknesses. The 90's were pretty poor overall for the introduction of characters but Marvel has been good about slowly explaining origins and back stories.

Wolverine, Cable, and Deadpool were characters that were introduced later and had histories that played out over years or decades.

And really for a long time Marvel just had better writers...

Uh... When I was a kid, I loved "Superman" and "Superman II". But have you watched them lately? Through the prism of NOT being a kid any more, and it being 2015? Those movies SUCK. Horrible dialogue, horrible acting, just... awful all around. If they released "Superman" today, it would be laughed at and flop horribly.

None of those things have anything to do with dialogue or acting like JD was pointing out. Getting a bunch of awards for SFX doesn't mean the movie overall was good.
