Prediction time: When will Mahomes take over for Smith?

The likely organizational plan is/was for Mahomes to take over next season and cut/trade Smith to recoup some needed draft picks and cap relief.

I think, Mahomes has not only shocked the Chiefs fans with his play but has also shocked the staff. Because of this, Veech made a crafted statement about how far ahead Smith was of Mahomes. They don't want to rock the boat yet, but they know as we know. If Mahomes didn't show that he is ready then the Chiefs don't make the comment, because it's not needed.

I think the time table will be moved up and Mahomes will take over for Smith during the season...for good.

The Chiefs weren't going to start Mahomes vs the Pats because of there defense nor do I think they start him early in the season. Unless this team is 7-3 or better going into the Bills game, that is when Mahomes is taking over. It is a home game against a bad team. Then they play the Jets at NY after. This will give him 2 games against bad teams before a home games against the Raiders, Dophins and at the Broncos. Of course, this could all change with injuries...and it might be another concussion/non concussion situation to start this and see how he handles it.

In before the "this post belongs in the other Mahomes threads"-----There can never be enough Mahomes threads on this forum.

Edit: Added Poll, hindsight 20/20 I should have combined injury or waiting to start until 2020 because that's essentially the same.

Poll would have been nice.

Mahomes will start a game or two because Alex rarely makes it an entire season.

As for "Taking Over", my guess is sometime during next offseason after Smith is traded.

I have come to think that no matter how the season unrolls, only an injury to Smith will make Mahomes start.

I think that any discussion as to Mahomes starting at any point this season is wishful thinking.

Next offseason. If it is before then, the Chiefs season is in the crapper.

October 30th.

Chiefs are 3-4. Losses to Pats, Steelers, Raiders, and one other upset loss in the 4 game set of Eagles, Chargers, Redskins, Texans.

After a lifeless first half on offense against Denver at home, Mahomes starts the 2nd half.

It's Alex Smiths' team this year.

It's boring and it may seem wasteful, but in the end it may be for the greater good.

Nobody can prove whether waiting in the wings (Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre) OR being thrown to the wolves (Russel Wilson, Big Ben, Cam Newton, and many more) is going to be the best decision for his career. I suppose we will see, and there will always be a "What if?".

I suppose it could be exciting just to wait in the roller coaster line with anticipation.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Nope. Andy has his flaws for sure but he ain't that stupid. He is an offensive guy who will go with the hot hand for sure. Now managing the clock is another thing.

If he is, then Veach has failed.

You would think there are plenty of bottom feeder teams that would trade for Alex to bring their seasons to 8 or 9 wins.

If the Chiefs keep a stupid salary for Alex Smith as a backup instead of turning them into Draft picks, then they got robbed once again by Alex.

2018, assuming the Chiefs are in the playoff hunt this year.....the moment they're no longer in the hunt, Mahomes will get his start. Even if AS has a crappy year like last year, if the Chiefs are winning bc of huge plays on ST and def again, Smith will still line up behind center.

Or when AS gets injured.

Those are the only scenarios I see, where Mahomes starts this season.

How many ****ing threads are articles are we going to have to read about this?

The hot hand? If you think Reid is going to shuffle Smith and Mahomes in and out of the lineup like a drunken Ned Yost, you're nuttier than a fruitcake. This is Smith's team unless he plays horribly and the team has a horrible record, something like 2-6. Then and only then will Reid make the switch to Mahomes, and then the switch will be permanent.
