How long are you letting it check? I've seen it take an hour or so. Probably a couple hundred updates available.

you may have better luck if you update via ethernet than wireless. 7 might not recognize your connection until it is updated.

I had it going for around 30 minutes. I've never seen it take that long before. I'll just open it up today and let it run.

Happened to me on a clean install I just did the other day. I left it for a couple hours and nothing happened.
I eventually gave up on it.

I think that there are times when the Microsoft server is unresponsive. I'll bet that if you try at a different time of the day, you'll get a connection.

does anyone happen to know what the name of the initial update file is? maybe I could download that manually and it would resolve this. The one thing I know about MS and updates on a clean install is that the first time you run it there is only one update. Once you reboot with that update it then goes out and gets the other 20-30

How are you accessing it? Are you going to Windows site or through the Control Panel?

Did you fresh install base win7, or win7 SP1. If its base win7, you will need to manually download and install service pack 1 before you can automatically get updates.
If you have already got sp1, try this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 I have recently fixed multiple PCs with windows update problems and it has had to do with the windows activation or windows update tool itself. |
