A fourth rounder for a guy that can give us a solid QB as a backup and mentor for our young gun would be a good buy. I don't think he's the type of guy to cause locker room problems. I have faith in Reid that his first question would be just that.

If he's the type of guy that would ask to be released instead of playing out his contract, he's ABSOLUTELY the type of guy that could cause locker room problems.

What is the obsession with Alex Smith anyway?

The difference between him and say, Jason Campbell, is NEGLIGIBLE.

IF you're talking about them being BACKUPS, that is.

The only way you get a difference out of them is if they're the full-time starter. So be honest, do you really want him as a backup?

Honstly, I'm in this for the long haul. I want Geno Smith to be drafted and turn out to be Tom Brady. Fact is, we don't know who or what we would get with Geno or any other rookie, and right now, we have NO ONE on the roster capable of winning in the NFL. If I'm a GM trying to build the best team I can, I have no problem giving Alex Smith a try for a 4th rounder and letting him compete to be the starter. If Geno can't beat him out, then we at least have a guy. I don't want to go the Geno route without some capable backup that can win games. I'd be fine with Jason Campbell as well, but haven't heard his name tossed around at all.

The only problem with your scenario is that it just isn't based in reality.

If they draft a QB #1 overall, he's going to be starting no later than mid-season.

Which means you wasted a draft pick on a guy that's going to be asking for his release 12 months from now.

That's a complete waste.

The reason you haven't heard Campbell's name yet is because he's going to be a free agent and free agency hasn't started.

this argument assumes that the quarterback drafted number one overall is actually able to start mid season or before and be successful. That is a big assumption that has made fools out of many franchises and put them back years when the guy they took didn't pan out (Leinert, Akili Smith, Jamarcus Russell, David Carr, etc.) I know not all those guys were drafted first overall, but they were all drafted very high and failed. Without a guy that is a capable qb already on the roster, you are forced to put a non ready rookie in the games. I just don't like it.

It's not an Alex Smith thing for me, its a "need a guy that can play" thing for me.

It doesn't matter if the #1 overall guy is able to start or not. The simple fact of the matter is that HE WILL.

Blaine Gabbert started his rookie season and he wasn't anywhere near ready. Be prepared because a #1 draft pick WILL start, whether he's ready or not.

And if you're in the "need a guy that can play" camp, you're with me. Alex Smith is overkill.

This is pretty much my stance. Geno and Alex and battle it out. Win-Win IMO.

Except that your scenario is pretty much pure fantasy.
