What are some ways to entertain a small child?
Ok CP, so next week I am meeting my girlfriend's 5 year old daughter for the first time. It's very important to me that we get along because I reaaaaally like my girlfriend, but this would obviously be a dealbreaker if I don't get along with her kid. Aside from "turn around and run immediately", I'm looking for any kind of advice to hit it off with the kid. Dad is out of the picture and grandpa is dead so she's never had any sort of male figure in her life.

My girlfriend says to "just be yourself" but I dunno WTF that means. I'm never around any kids so I don't know what they find funny or entertaining. Should I bring gifts? Do kids still like the "pull a quarter out of the ear" trick? I loved that when I was a kid but is there anything else? Has the game been upped since that trick came along? Any funny jokes kids that age like?

I'm not a kid person at all. Im lousy at small talk and i'm really bad at pretending that i give a shit. If it's not my kid, i simply can't relate.

If you're anything like me i'd say DON'T be yourself. But yeah, find some princess stuff, Ice Cream (especially if momma doesn't wanna give her Ice Cream, make sure you fight to give her Ice cream, she'll love you forever) and movies.

I have a little 4 year old niece that never liked me. I tried to talk to her and all that but she would just look away or ignore me. About two months ago she was staying over. I went out of my way to rent her the original little mermaid. I turned around and looked at her and said, "Hey. You know it was ME who rented this for you right?" She smiled at me and we've had a great relationship ever since.

Really, the best thing you can do for her is be good to her mom.

As for dealing with the kid, do something with her, play a game, order pizza or something, just do what she wants and legitimately spend time with her. Play hide and go seek, play a video game with her. Just do fun stuff.

This....nothing says you care like treating her and her mother like they are people....valued people.

Besides Rain Man's poor attempt at humor, there are some good thoughts in here. But the best is just being yourself....kids lead you down the path of what makes them happy, so just learn to play along. If she want to talk Princess' just listen and learn....if she wants you to sit and watch one of her favorite shows while she tells you all about it then listen with intent.

I am like Katipan....it's hard to give you specific advice because we can't really tell what the intent of the Mom is. She may want to see how you are with kids....or just how you are with her daughter.

Just be yourself....because like someone already said, a kid can tell a fake a mile away.

And how you steal the heart of her little girl, will go a long way to stealing the heart of your girlfriend.
