HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

I think it was a mistake for GRRM to veer so far afield from the "core" characters in that book. He should have at least interspersed a little Tyrion or Jon Snow in there to keep us going.
It's obvious that all the main players will be back for "Dragons". If Martin can effectively weave the minor characters featured in "Feast" with the major players then it can be all the better. There is no doubt that there will be major interactions, as each group has grand plans for the kingdom.

They ****ed that up big-time, there is really no other explanation. When I saw the Lannister sigil next to Emilia Clarke I quit looking at them. Cool concept but they need to pay better attention. But if this is what I am griping about, that means they did a damn good job with the show so far.

Yeah, I actually started to enjoy some of the plotlines in Feast (Sansa's development is interesting) ... but I resented them because I wanted to know what was going on with the others.

Again, I haven't read Feast yet... but for those who have.... if the HBO series makes it that far, would you guys prefer that they integrate the stories in Feast and Dance over two season? Or would you rather they just adapt them faithfully?

Feast with its own season could be rough, as it focuses on minor characters and after all the shit that goes down in Swords, could be a letdown. My thought would be do one long season of like 18 episodes with 6 dedicated to Feast and 12 dedicated to Dance.

They should be adding episodes for each book. Clash should be 12-14 hours, and Storm should be 14-16 hours. Once the POV's split up at the conclusion of AGoT, you're going to have at least 8 threads spinning outward. What a nightmare it is going to be to figure out what to include/change.

Agreed. Doing a season on just Feast would be a disaster. It would basically be saying: "You won't see this group of characters for an entire season, and then next season, you won't see the characters you just watched in this season". It didn't work in a literary sense, and I think it would have even worse consequences in a TV series.

Given that the two books cover the same time frame, I'd like to see them viewed as one entity, and base the HBO show off the combined story. Would probably have to be split over two seasons, but I don't think that would be an issue...

I honestly think Clash could be done in 10 episodes. I'd love to see it expanded to 13, though. But 10 is easily doable.

Storm should definitely be expanded. It would be hard to do it justice in only 10 episodes. I think season three has to be no fewer than 13 episodes - 16 to 18 would be better.

If I had to guess, I'd bet they'll do a combined Feast/Dance - go back and forth between the stories in each - over the course of 2 seasons (like shag suggested), maybe 12 or 13 episodes per. But if you guys think it would be possible, I'd love to see them do it in one long season.

Either way... I'm excited. I can't wait to pick up Feast. I'm ready for it.

I would combine the two books, since they run concurrently, and go for two seasons.

My wish is that it turns into a smashing success, and we get the Dunk and Egg stories as HBO Original Films. Imagine having The Hedge Knight premiere between seasons 2 and 3. Such a pipe-dream, but man, that would be awesome.

Another "if" for ya'all...

So, what if the show doesn't go past 2 seasons? Would you want to see them try to finish the series on film? Obviously, the stories would have to be seriously gutted. But would you even be interested in a Storm Of Swords theatrical film? Even if it was 3hrs long?

No.

The cynical part of me doesn't believe it's going to last beyond 2 years, and I'm really wondering just how they'll end the series if that happens.
