HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Also, if you can't appreciate dialogue, then you shouldn't ****ing watch TV.
There is a shitload of backstory to the Jaime/Mad King angle that hopefully will be more fleshed out in the show, but I am not sure if it will.

3) We find out Daenerys is pregnant
4) Viserys makes an ass out of himself and gets punked the **** out by one of the bloodriders
5) Arya starts her dancing lessons with Syrio
6) Conversations between Tyrion and Jon Snow, which were very interesting and enlightening
7) Intro of many characters of the Night's Watch (Commander Mormont, Ser Aliser Thorne, Grenn, Pyp, Maester Aemon, Yoren, etc.).
8) Development of Jon's character after Tyrion talks to him about the backgrounds of the boys Jon schooled in training.

Without going into spoiler territory, all those items above are important in their own ways. Nothing about the episode says boring to me. If you were bored by it, it's probably best you just stopped watching. The books are filled with descriptions and setups similar to what you saw in the last episode.
Also Benjen is about to go North of the wall.

I don't know if that's really important, but I know from what I've read that Jon mentions or thinks about it a few times.

Benjen seems like a badass by the way.

You also see the continued change of Dany and Drogo's relationship. And connected with that, and with the 4th item you mentioned, you're also seeing the change in Dany's status with the Dothraki, and how she's embracing her role as Khaleesi.

There was a lot of set-up in the episode, some (much...) of it which may not even register on the first viewing.

I'm actually looking forward to watching the entire season again in a couple of months.

Without spoiling anything, that is important as well. The cool thing about having read the books is that I can see the importance of every little thing that would be lost on the viewers that haven't read the books.

Yeah, that and the details of the rebellion are getting the short shrift.

It's a huge book and unfortunately they're trying to cram it into 10 episodes...

I'm going to put off reading the book and ask you guys if its worth going back and finishing after the season ends. I struggle with such long books sometimes.

One thing that they accomplished in the show that really didn't dawn on me when reading the book is that Dany's relationship with Khal Drogo develops into probably the first positive relationship with a male in her life, given how Viserys treats her. That really dawned on me when they showed her and Khal cuddling after she told him she was pregnant.

I would say yes. The books are so incredibly good. They're the kind that will keep you up all night.

I am used to long books after having read many of Stephen King's long-ass books. I will say that the Song of Ice and Fire books, while they were all really long were also very quick reads for me and were not daunting at all. I was actually pissed there wasn't more to each book, I got really hooked.

Episode 2: This is awesome!
Episode 3: Yawn
I have three friends all watching this series who haven't read the books. I warned them that some people (mainly you) thought the episode was slow (I hadn't watched it at that point). They all three disagreed after watching it and thought the episode had the feeling of things building up and deepening.

Maybe you're just not a person who enjoys intrigue, plot thickening and character development. Nothing wrong with that.

Hands down my favorite episode of the series so far. The show still feels like it's moving really fast. But this episode finally got deep down into what I love about the books. Just great, dynamic characters playing their conspiratory games. This episode really focused on the people - their flaws and their desires. How can anyone not appreciate characters that are this rich? Writing that is this attentive? Man... I just loved it.

Honestly, I don't have a single complaint about this series so far. It continues to exceed my expectations.
