Missouri is all heart
By Jason King, Yahoo! Sports
5 hours, 1 minute ago

GLENDALE, Arizona – They don’t have any McDonald’s All-Americans, and only a few of them have a chance to go pro. Still, for the 2008-09 Missouri Tigers, it has always been less about rankings and more about results.

“In recruiting, people put stars on people,” Tigers coach Mike Anderson said. “But you can’t put a star on a guy’s heart.”

Heart, more than anything, is what propelled the Tigers past Memphis 102-91 on Thursday at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The victory gives Missouri a spot in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2002.

The No. 3 seed in the West Region, Anderson’s squad will face top-seed Connecticut at 4:40 ET on Saturday.

Missouri – which finished just 16-16 a year ago – is seeking its first Final Four berth in school history. The Tigers are playing in their first NCAA tournament since 2003.

“With the chance and opportunity to keep playing more games, exhaustion isn’t even in our minds right now,” forward Leo Lyons said. “We’re so excited about being this close to a championship. A sense of urgency is about to kick in.”

About to kick in?

Ask Memphis coach John Calipari or any of his players, and they’ll tell you that Missouri couldn’t have played with any more energy on Thursday night. Anderson’s squad shot 53.2 percent against Memphis’ vaunted defense. Five players scored in double figures. J.T. Tiller had 23 points while Lyons added 15 and 12 rebounds.

Last year’s tournament runner-up, Memphis had won 27 consecutive games before Thursday, with the last loss coming more than three months ago – on Dec. 20.

Memphis, 33-4 and a No. 2 seed in the tournament, was attempting to reach the Elite Eight for the fourth consecutive season.

“No one has done this to us,” Calipari said. “No one. They beat us at our own game.”

A former assistant under Arkansas legend Nolan Richardson, Anderson’s teams take pride in their “Forty Minutes of Hell” defense – a full-court attack that causes the game to be played at a frenetic pace.

That was certainly the case on Thursday. Even though Memphis managed to shoot 50.7 percent from the field, Calipari’s team was visibly winded in the latter stages of both halves.

“I thought our defense was good,” said Anderson, now in his third year at Missouri. “People may look at the score and not think that. But I thought it was good. It was disruptive. There are lots of ways you can disrupt a team. It’s not just about taking the basketball. It’s not feast or famine.

“Our pressure defense has a (way) of wearing and tearing on people and taking them out of what they want to do. You saw that in the second half.”

While Missouri’s defense certainly bothered Memphis, its offense wasn’t too shabby, either. A 16-4 run midway through the first half turned a four-point deficit into a 37-29 lead. Memphis responded with two baskets to narrow the deficit to 37-33, but Missouri countered with seven consecutive points to pull ahead by 10.

“They got (the ball) in quick and ran it right up our backs,” Calipari said. “We couldn’t get back there and form that wall. It’s not like they beat us shooting threes. It’s not like they beat us shooting free throws. They beat us going to the rim and getting offensive rebounds and layups.”

The biggest shot of the game came when freshman Marcus Denmon swished a shot from beyond halfcourt as the buzzer sounded ending the first half. Just like that, Missouri had a 49-36 lead and a momentum it would never relinquish.

“Every shot they put up in the first half was going in,” Memphis guard Antonio Anderson said. “Whether it was a half-court shot or a bank shot, there was nothing we could do about it.”

Memphis standout Tyreke Evans led all scorers with 33 points. A freshman, Evans is expected to make himself eligible for the NBA draft, although he said after the game that he has yet to make a decision about his future.

Calipari, meanwhile, was left to answer questions about whether playing in a weak Conference USA left his team ill-prepared for Missouri.

“There is only one other team (UCLA) that has won as many NCAA tournament games as we have in the last four years,” said Calipari, whose recent NCAA wins have come against schools such as UCLA, Michigan State and Texas.

“I think that kind of tells you that, in the NCAA tournament, we’re prepared to play.

“Obviously we weren’t as prepared to play Missouri today.”

No arguement. Supreme domination of an insanely talented team.

I know Memphis had a really good record in the regular season but I don't think they are as good as a number 2 seed usually is. Duke is in the same boat.

Congrats to Missouri, but they are going to get stomped by UCONN.

UCONN is very talented. However I don't believe they are a very deep team. MIZZOU will be in this game. They may not win but I highly doubt they get "stomped".

I could care less if we get throttled by UCONN, no one predicted mizzou to make it to the tourney let alone be in the EE...

It will not diminish this season 1 bit

I am very interested to see how Uconn matches up. Since MUs big guys can shoot the 3, Thabeet can't set in the lane anymore. I'd probably go zone if I were UConn. Or maybe just DEFEND SOMEBODY ONCE.

UConn also only had six guys with more than 10 minutes against Purdue. It looks like they are deeper then that overall, but I am wondering how they are going to approach Saturday's game.

Mizzou sends message with beatdown

By Dana O'Neil
ESPN.com

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- They gathered together in the summer, a hodgepodge of players who were more like castaways thrown together on an island.

There were five freshmen, a junior college transfer, a Division I transfer and a pack of veterans who had little to offer for a rallying cry other than the remnants of a 16-16 finish the year before.

They all had agreed to stay on campus for a sort of summer-long icebreaker, figuring the best way to become the '08-09 Missouri basketball team was a full-on immersion.

"There's not a whole lot to do in Columbia, Missouri, in the summer when the students are gone," Matt Lawrence explained. "Big surprise there, I know. So after we played all day long, we'd go out and grab pizza or whatever at night. We were together all the time."

The one they all remember was the kid, this freshman from Baltimore who would not stop with his crazy talk.

A few days into the summer, when they still could have used Hello My Name Is tags to identify one another, Kim English was chattering about winning a national championship.

"He's like, 'Hey, this team could win it all,'" J.T. Tiller said. "A freshman. I'm looking at him like, 'Let's make the tournament first.'"

No one laughs at English any more. Well, that's not true. This team laughs at everybody, a regular comedy on the court of smart-cracking jokesters who have grown from a team of strangers to a team; a team now 40 minutes from Missouri's first Final Four in school history, 120 minutes from making crazy English a prophet.

Mizzou beat Memphis in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night, which wasn't exactly an outlandish proposition what with the school's Big 12 tournament title in its hip pocket and No. 3 seed.

It is how Missouri obliterated Memphis that will send the message Mizzou has been trying to send since gathering over the summer. If a 102-91 beatdown of a team that sometimes doesn't give up 100 points in two games doesn't say Missouri is for real, nothing will. Memphis hasn't give up that many points in 18 years.

"What they did to us today no one has done to us," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "We've lost Elite Eight games, lost Final Four games, but they punched us in the mouth and we did not respond."

No, Memphis recoiled, digging a hole as deep as 24 points, which is what it might be like to watch Tiger Woods triple-bogey the entire front nine.

In other words, surreal because it just doesn't happen.

But this whole season is borderline wild for Missouri. Picked to finish seventh in its own league and NCAA tournament bystanders for six years, Mizzou instead has won a school-record 31 games, its first Big 12 championship and, counting that conference run, is on a 6-0 dash through the postseason with a date with top-seeded Connecticut on Saturday.

All that with a team full of Bob Evanses, not Tyreke Evanses (and we mean that as a compliment).

The sweat was barely dry on Tyreke Evans' brow before someone asked him what his future was, whether the freshman would indeed be one-and-done (and after a 33-point effort the simple answer is, "Ya think?").

No one was asking anyone in the Missouri locker room about their draft status.

"Coach likes to say we don't have any McDonald's All-Americans," English said. "We have Burger King All-Americans."

Actually, what the Tigers have is a team full of guys like Mike Anderson, in his third season at Missouri's helm. These are hard-nosed, scrappy players, guys who could have played for Nolan Richardson, Anderson's coach and mentor. They outshot Memphis, yes, hitting 53 percent of their field goals against a team that was the best in the country in field-goal defense.

More, Mizzou out-toughed Memphis, literally wrenching the ball out of player's hands on more than one occasion. In a game where most people figured Missouri's best-case scenario was to keep it close and hope for a shot at the end, Mizzou went directly at Memphis and sliced and diced with ease. Mizzou needed only six 3-pointers to top the 100-point mark (that one of them was a Marcus Denmon 60-foot, halftime-buzzer-beating heave only made the night somehow more poetic for Mizzou).

By the middle of the second half, Memphis players were tugging on their shorts, the universal hoops sign for exhaustion.

"Yeah, I saw that," DeMarre Carroll grinned.

Tiller had more points in one half (16) than he had in an entire game this season, finishing with a career-high 23.

And he's the defensive specialist.

And he had a bum wrist.

"That's J.T.," Lawrence said. "He could have a broken hand and he'd be out there. Pain is nothing to him."

That's what you get with the BK All-American, a kid who will not just buy into Anderson's hellacious system but who adopts his attitude, as well.

No one believed Anderson could mop up Quin Snyder's mess at Missouri; not his way anyway, not after he suspended five players following a fight, sent his leading scorer and rebounder packing and stood his moral ground despite the vultures circling over his head.

No one except a bunch of kids in the locker room.

Though not even Anderson was on board with English initially.

Asked what he would have thought if someone told him at the beginning of the season he'd be playing for a shot at the Final Four, Anderson laughed.

"I would be asking what are you smoking and drinking, man," he said.

But in those boring summer days, two things happened. First, the players who didn't know one another realized they liked one another. They have gone from virtual strangers to a merry band of jokesters. In the postgame locker room, English leaned in among the reporters interviewing Denmon with a water bottle for a microphone; Lawrence joked about Denmon's half-court prowess; and when asked about picking up two quick fouls, Zaire Taylor said with a straight face, "I wanted to give J.T. a chance to realize his full potential. I thought it was time for him to take ownership. It might have looked like it was the wrong move, but it was the right move."

Sitting one chair over, Tiller laughed and shook his head.

After the friendship came something even more critical: The players started to think that maybe English was onto something.

"The thing is you have to believe you can do it," English said. "If you aim for anything less, then you're just selling yourself short. If you don't believe you can win it all, who will?"

As of today, maybe a whole lot more people where Missouri is concerned.

Sorry I hate MU. I have an absolutely perfect bracket except for two MU games. I had them getting knocked out by Marquette and I had Marquette knocking out Memphis.

UCONN is my national champion this year.

I too think UCONN stomps a mud hole in MU's azz.

Of course the Tiger's consolation is solace in knowing
they have the butt-ugliest, baby-shit yellow unis in
the tourney. When are they gonna burn those nasty rags?

It would be absolutely hilarious to see MU take out UConn and absolutely take a dump in the punch bowl of all the prognosticators.

You can bet your life that Calhoun is showing the tape of the Memphis/OU/KU wins by MU and reminding them that everyone took this Tiger team lightly.
