Is 2010 the Year 11 Wins Stays Home?

After watching San Diego dismantle the Colts yesterday, I started wondering about the Chiefs wildcard playoff chances (you know, just in case SD catches us in the AFC West race). After looking at the remaining schedules of the division leaders and their closest rivals, I think there's a good chance some team could be sitting at home with an 11-5 record...

Teams that could get to 11/11+:

Great Shot - Jets and Patriots (2nd place in the division a likely wildcard), only need to go 2-3 over the next five weeks.

Solid Shot - Ravens and Steelers, need to go 3-2. One of these teams is very likely to get to 11 since they face one another next week. The winner will also likely be division champion...can they both get to 11 and secure a likely wildcard spot?

Could - Chiefs need to go 4-1...so we have a chance. The game in SD looks very tough, but otherwise I can see winning out at home a beating St. Louis in the dome.

Also Could - San Diego - Yeah they need to win out...but geez, look at that favorable schedule.

So that's six teams that could get to 11 wins with only three division champions. Indy, Jacksonville and Miami could all get to 11 if they win out as well, but from what I've seen from each, and their schedules, 5-0 would be very improbable.

Yeesh...11 wins and on the couch for the playoffs. That would suck!

I see this happening. It's going to suck, but such is life. Like the 10-6 2006 team not making it, then a year later the 2007 team (which sucked ass by comparison) snuck in at 9-7.

In the end, though, we did it to ourselves, pissing away two easy victories against Houston and Oakland that will cost us the division and the playoffs.
Actually, the 2005 team went 10-6, the 2006 team went 9-7...the 2007 team went 4-12. after going 4-2.

The only team to go 11-5 in the modern 16-game era and not make the playoffs, IIRC, was my 2008 Patriots led by Matt Cassel.

If the Chiefs, also led by Matt Cassel, go 11-5 and don't make the playoffs... I think we know what the problem is.

**** me once, shame on you; **** me twice, shame on me. If the Chiefs go 11-5 and miss the playoffs... antifreeze AIDS tree fire time for him.

Just think, NFCW champ could make it to the Super Bowl and lose, and still only have 10 victories... and barely be above .500 for the season.

Happened in 2008. Hence the "Castle" Curse that these folks are referring to. Pats won 11 and didn't go to the dance.

FTR, I don't see anyone getting to 11-5 and NOT going to the playoffs. Doubt the AFCW/S runner up will be that good, to be honest.

And the AFC North/East runner up could falter. Dunno about Steelers/Ravens, but Pats/Jets have brutal games remaining (each other, other division foes, Bears, Packers, etc.)

This happens most years.

Inevitably, a couple teams will stumble and lose a game or two that nobody expected them and normalcy will reign. 11-5 gets you in and 10-6 just might.

Unfortunately, it's just as likely as not that KC is one of said teams...

If we lose to the Chargers, we would be tied with them. That half game is kind of a fictitious thing. Its not really a half game. Just that if both teams were tied right now the Chiefs would lead the division since they have the head to head win. But if the Chargers win in SD then the head to head is all even up. Depending on next week's games, the division could be tied up, too. Both SD and KC are 1-2 in the division currently. Both have division opponents next week (Den @ KC and Oak @ SD).
