The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

That's why I'm holding onto hope.....

The Chiefs are not a logical landing spot for Alex Smith. Alex Smith can go start in Buffalo. He can go start for the Jets. Shit...he can go start for the Jags or the Browns.

The Chiefs have the #1 pick and the ability to get the best QB this year. Alex Smith would be out of a starting job by Week 8 here.

About what? That makes FAR more sense than the 49ers leaking it and then denying it. If anything the "deal essentially done" remarks might have scared potential offers away.

Trading for and developing another team's backup QB has worked out TWICE in recent memory.

Matt Hasselbeck
Brett Favre

TWO. There have been more undrafted starting QBs that have done great things in that same amount of time (1992) than TWO.

And that's if you consider Hasselbeck a rousing success. Ask Seattle fans about his first three years there and how much of a headache he was. Ask them about Jon Kitna and Brock Huard.

If I were an NFL GM, I would trade for another team's backup QB NEVER. I don't care about the deal I got for him. It's a waste of draft picks.

If Alex Smith at 8.5 mil is worth a 4th+. Matt Cassel is worth a Mr Irrelevant. I do wonder what releasing him now would do the QB market, media wise?

I'm not even thinking about the 2nd or 3rd round.

Alex Smith and someone other than a QB at #1 is a deal breaker for me.

I completely agree with you. However if you put yourself in their shoes they're only worried about one thing. Keeping their jobs. Alex is more of a proven thing and therefore a much higher probability of not completely failing in the short term. If they trade for Smith it's not for the team's best interest but for their own.

EJ Manuel sucks. No.

Tyler Bray needs a lot of coaching. Raw talent. Potential headcase.

Hall of famer for sure...
That's not a fair statement and you know it.

Look, trading for AS is not my favorite scenario, but the man has worked under many different OCs and a couple of years for a totally defensive-minded coach. Only the last two years is when he has had some stability and a quarterback-friendly HC. I think the last two years are more of an indication of his abilities than the previous several. In KC he will also operate with a QB-friendly coach and I expect him to stay mature and play well.

The man WAS the 1st pick of the draft once upon a time, for heavens sake.
