A necessary question about Matt Cassel.

I've been as pleased as anyone by his progress, but let's ask ourselves a necessary question:

For all of his stats since he's "gotten it" from the Denver loss on this season...

How many come from behind drives has he engineered?

How many two minute drills that won us the game?

How many times did he carry us when the run game failed?

How many shootouts did he outlast the opposing QB we couldn't stop?

This is intended as a reality check, not as an effort to find fault in everything.

To be realistic about this team, you have to love Cassel's progress, but he's still just that. A work in progress. And it's not particularly even remotely close to being clear how close he is to being finished. And he's how old...

The playoff game will tell us how good of a QB we have. The Ravens will put an unbelievable amount of heat on him. The Jets will eliminate Dwayne Bowe. And the defense will get scored on.

How Cassel will respond is... anything but clear. And if it's a choke job, we have to admit that the progress we've seen in Cassel hasn't elevated him to a Super Bowl quarterback. It's elevated him to a decent quarterback.

Ask yourselves that question, though.

How many 2 minute drills that won us a game this year?

One? Buffalo? And it took us 5 tries to get it there?

Now, I know that was Old Cassel, and this is New Cassel. But New Cassel hasn't been tested to the degree that we know what we're dealing with here.

I know we are the best 2 minute team at the half in the league. But thats over the whole season. Not just since denver. IIRC we have scored over 60 points in the last two minutes going into the half. As for the last 2 minutes of the game, we are seldom behind. So that situation isn't always called for. But we are always trying to score at the half.

And we are better than any other team at it.

Since Cassel transformed, or a ghost took over his body, he hasn't been tested in any of those situations. All I've seen is that he doesn't hit the panic button, he's not getting sacked much, he doesn't only rely on the check downs, he seems to have confidence and goes out there and plays with heart. He's our leader and I like what I see, it took him a while to get here but in a clutch situation, I think Cassel will do fine now.

And that's a really, really good stat. But...

Listen, I don't intend the OP to be an assault on Cassel. Just a reality check, to make us aware that he is still very much a question mark.

His play since the Denver debacle onward has been impressive. But he hasn't been tested to the point where we know we've got a Super Bowl caliber guy.

My guess is, the playoffs will tell us more than all the games this season combined since New Cassel showed up.

I like the thoughts, but do believe we have seen Cassel in a hurry up style offense. Now mind you it wasn't a two minute drill with the game on the line, but he seemed comfortable in a no huddle offense. I know this doesn't really answer your question (rhetorical question I assume anyway), but just my thoughts when I read the OP.

You put it better that I could: clutch situation.

I want to see Cassel in the clutch.

We've only got a few glimpses this season, and they were all shitty. But they were all when Old Cassel was still around.

New Cassel doesn't look like the same guy, but he hasn't been similarly tested.

He's still a huge question mark. And if he chokes it away in the playoffs, well... we've got a decent QB. Not one that will get us to the Super Bowl.

I'll say this: even when he was Old Cassel, he played much better in the hurry up than he did normally.

And during games where the offense was going at a very brisk pace, like the Titans game (first half: every snap of ours was with like 10-15 seconds left on the playclock) he's at his best.

And he actually played very clutch in New England a few games.

But that was then.

My thoughts echo yours. I can't wait for the playoffs.

We won't get to the Super Bowl. But for Cassel skeptics like myself, this is his Super Bowl to prove himself to all of us.
