Heh, at this point it doesn't matter if we're playing Sister Mary of the Blind. KU is so young right now that they can't expect to beat anyone. Hopefully, Self can get them playing better as a team soon.

Lending a hand

The game Kansas scheduled tonight against New Orleans happened after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Crescent City and left the Privateers to play off-campus at the University of Texas at Tyler.

"I called Monte (Towe) to see where they were at and what was going on," KU associate athletic director Larry Keating said of a conversation with the New Orleans coach. "We knew they'd struggle with teams agreeing to come to Tyler. We also knew there was a chance to get something on ESPN."

ESPN2 will telecast tonight's game and share UNO's story nationally. In addition, KU will give New Orleans a $75,000 guarantee, which is more than the usual payout, which ranges from $40,000-50,000.

The game is the second for a New Orleans team at KU. Earlier this month, KU agreed to host the women's tournament it had originally been scheduled to play at New Orleans.

Tough stretch

The 2-7 record New Orleans brings into tonight's game at Kansas does not reflect a single true home game.

The Privateers evacuated to the University of Texas at Tyler and played three games there. The game at KU is their sixth true road game out of seven, including the fourth in a row after also going to LSU, Purdue and Vanderbilt.

"We think that we have issues to deal with, but think of the issues that they deal with on a daily basis," KU coach Bill Self said.

On the court, UNO also suffered a severe blow when junior guard Bo McCalebb was lost for the season on Nov. 30 when he suffered a fractured right wrist against Mississippi State. Through the first four games, McCalebb led UNO in points (19.0), steals (3.5) and minutes (33.2).

Rush needs to bomb

Although he was regarded as an athletic player with a quick step to the basket, Brandon Rush is showing good range as a shooter.

Through KU's 6-4 start, the 6-foot-6 freshman guard is shooting .600 (15 of 25) from 3-point range and has been told to fire away more often.

"Brandon can't be nervous about making mistakes. Brandon's got to be a playmaker for us. And, he has gotten better," KU coach Bill Self said. "When you're shooting 60 percent from 3-point range, you shouldn't be shooting three a game. He should be taking eight a game and shooting 40 percent. That would help the team a lot more."
