Thinking about buying a gun...questions...just the basics
My boyfriend and I are in agreement that we'd like to own a gun. I need to take a basics class. He's somewhat familiar, but would probably also take the course as a refresher. We would like to take the lesson with our own gun, instead of using one of the range's, so that we could ask questions about our gun specifically. I guess my question is...where do we start?
He's doing his own research, but I would like to do some, too. I have no clue where to start though. I know we want a handgun (pistol...is there a difference?), and I don't think we'd need anything too big. I know the bigger the gun the bigger the recoil. I've shot two guns in my life, both on the same occasion, and only a few shots with each. My boyfriend said something about a glock 9mm. Any suggestions? Any other questions I don't even know to ask? EDIT: Finally purchased https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/glo...dCatid=7555491 Last edited by luv; 03-18-2020 at 12:50 PM.. |

I have a Glock 17 9mm. I bought it because I liked 9mm, and it was more comfortable for my (now ex) wife to handle. I was traveling for work, and wanted her to have protection should she need it. Now it's just me and my 11 year old daughter in the house and I will likely take her to the range to teach her to shoot it this summer. My view on gun safety is a little different than most where kids are concerned. My Glock is in the night stand next to the bed, not locked up. After all, if it's locked up, can you get to it in the event that you have a break in and actually need it? The magazine is loaded and lying next to it. My daughter can get to it, but she doesn't. She knows where it is because I showed her. I also explained to her that it was not a toy and could be very dangerous and that she was not to touch it. She has never tried to mess with it. I believe that the problems occur when the guns are hidden and the child finds them to be something mysterious. They then want to play with it out of curiosity. Take the curiosity out of it and teach them to respect it and you won;t have ant worries.

Meaning you have to actively take it off safety. IMO that's the best type with kids around. I agree on the glock feel. Not a fan of them. |

I don't agree with the choice of firearm. The 9mm is just a weak ass round . look at the Fort Lauderdale shooter. He hit 13 people and only killed 5. |

If you're looking at a 9mm, then I'd highly recommend at least shooting a CZ75.
Learning would lend me to think a .357 Magnum revolver would be beneficial. You can shoot lower recoil .38 loads out of it, and a revolver teaches a shooter to be more discretionary with shots. |

Well, like I said, it was for my wife to shoot as well, and soon will be for my daughter to shoot. I feel like the 9mm is ideal for them with the lower amount of recoil. If it was just me shooting it, yeah, give me a Desert Eagle .45 cal. But no way am I putting that in my daughter or wife's hands.

Plus they are the best handgun to take to the range. They shoot oh-so smooth. Easy to rack slide, very little recoil, .45 ACP has decent stopping power, and it has two separate safeties. |

Most gun ranges that a worth a shit have rentals, my best advice would be to go to a range, talk to the guy behind the counter for recommendations, rent a few and pick the one that is comfortable for you.
Right now I own a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9mm for my CC gun (i rarely carry) and a H&K Vp9 as my full framed 9mm. My girlfriend was deathly afraid of guns before we met, but she really likes shooting my Shield. I'd look into those, you can usually get one for under $450 new in box. As for muh .45 stoppin powah. Speer gold dot 124 gr hollow points are just as good with less recoil (also sell them in 147 grain, but make sure your gun can handle that ammo). I used to have a Springfield 1911 and the girlfriend shot it once and hated it. Too much recoil. I'm thinking about picking glock 43 come tax season. |
