All of the gang is supposedly alive in 2030. Robin cannot have kids and she's said to have never been a mother at all. Lily and Marshall seem to only have one kid in Marvin.

The only reason I'd lean the other way is that they weren't exactly subtle in the episode tonight, if that's the direction they're going they pretty much gave it away.

I was thinking this too. Because the show prided itself on twists and turns, and they're giving us a layup here. But I've thought about it every which way, and this seems like the only idea that makes sense. The only other possibilities I see are that they lose their daughter, unless it's a story about losing touch with Robin until the end when she dies. But I think either of those would be odd possibilities. If it's the mother, they may be preparing a slow build-up to it so it doesn't just hammer you in the face.

By the way... any significance to the idea that, from what I remember, Bob Saget didn't narrate any of the flashforwards this week? Actually... don't know if he ever has.

For a show called "How I Met Your Mother", it would be nice if they would actually show the two of them meeting and getting to know each other. Instead they've shown her meeting just about everybody else, they show flash forwards of the two of them as a happily married couple, and they've wasted an entire freaking season building up to a wedding that is the ultimate Deus ex Machina.

I liked every episode of this show until this final season. This season blows. I think the writers are just mailing it in.

And I can't get over the kid's reaction in 2030 when Ted starts telling them the story of How he Met their Mother, if their mom is gone. Makes them seem like snot-nosed little punks.

Also, wasn't Ted balding at the reunion in 2020? Yet tonight's episode in 2024, he has excellent hair? Weird.

There was so much potential lost in cramming the mothers backstory into one single episode this year. For everything they have done wrong this year, I really believe that was their biggest mistake. Now if it is heading where we all think it is heading, we have a new #1 for **** ups this year.

Couple of options:

1. This is confirmation that she is dying/will die. And if that's what's going to happen, I'm THRILLED that they are tipping their hand now. It's too much to drop that kind of bomb in the finale. This way we can all weep and get used to it and we can still have a very uplifting and satisfying finale.

2. This is a red herring. Maybe Ted's mom didn't make it to their wedding. Or maybe Her mother didn't make it. There are options. And it could be really brilliant for the show runners to pull this, depending on how it plays out.

3. We're reading too much into it. (Doubtful)

At this point, for me, if they are setting up that she's going to die, I do hope that Ted's story to his kids is his way of breaking the news. Or that she's LONG dead. I haven't paid attention to the math of this thing. But if she JUST died when Ted began his story, his kids are dicks. Also, depending on the timing of everything, it could be really weird that Ted, Marshall & Lilly are high at their reunion and Ted's laughing about where his wife is. If she's already dead, that's tacky, maybe.

On the other hand, this does make the Time Traveler episode better and poignant. Which is cool.

Whatever else happens, I do agree, that it would be nice to see Ted and the Mother meet. I hope that's one of the last things we see. The flash-forwards have been lovely, but I do want to see them actually meet.

It sucks so much for Ted if she dies. Man. All this time, all these mistakes, all the backsteps, just to find the love of his life and lose her after a handful of years. If that's what they're doing, it'll make the show really hard to rewatch, knowing what's to come.

For the first time, I can see the mother's dead story developing. I hate it, and it will ruin the whole run if it comes about.

If the Mother isn't dying and Ted is telling the kids the story for a reason, and this reason has been at least been kept in mind since Season 2 when they filmed Penny and Luke's reaction for the final scene then there has to be a pressing reason for him to tell the story.

Episode 200 reveals the Mother wants to end poverty, and the episode before this week's showed that the Mother has received acclaim for her book as we see her and Ted on their way to celebrate this occasion. Last night, Ted gets choked up with the whole Mother not being there for her daughter's wedding which is anywhere from seven to 15 years away from the "present" day in 2030 when the kids are told the story of how their parents met.

The Mother won't be around after 2030 because she's involved in something important dedicated to ending poverty and that this effort will take her away from Ted and the kids for an extended period of time and could be very dangerous. This is why Ted is telling the kids the "greatest love story ever" in that he details how much time passed and what he learned before finding the perfect woman and how he's at peace with her leaving to follow her passion of ending poverty because that's what love is.

Agree to disagree. Maybe it should have been a 1-hour episode. But it was one of the few times in the last few seasons where they went right for the punch instead of painfully dragging it out. I thought it was one of their best pieces of writing the entire series.
