Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Honestly, I bet we can get what we want out of him if we threaten the tag next year.

I bet we can get him for a good deal, and even a position switch.

If Miami does this trade and pays Albert the same or more than Long they're reeruned. They could have kept Long and saved the pick.

If they trade up with Oakland, for multiple picks, they're even more reeruned. Although that would be cheaper in the $$ dept, they'd be losing multiple guys that might be starter quality players. For a tackle.

If they use the first pick on Jordan, they should probably be trying to trade Hali immediately to maximize the return.

I'm on this train as well. Make him play out his tag and prove his worth health wise and LT wise.

**** all this BS about trying to get some garbage pick for him to settle some FO rift between them or compensation for over paying for Average Smith. All the while drafting his replacement at #1. Stupid logic.

It's mind boggling how this FO has handled the QB and Albert situation after doing fairly well everywhere else.

He is franchise good this year playing LT and after we draft the LTOTF to play RT for one year he'll either drop his price or move on and we're fine.

We season our future LT for one year vs. lesser pass rushers and allow his confidence to grow and lower Albert's leverage while loading the line with talent.

Win/Win...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Eh.

Honestly, what you're getting for Hali now, you'll get for him next year.

He's a great talent, but he'll only have about four/five years left and cost $14m.

Hali is a super enthusiastic bringer-upper for rookie players, too. Justin Houston has thrived playing across from him.

If you draft Jordan, then please keep Hali a year, then try to restructure and trade.

Reid will trade him when he has a year or two left, like he did with stud after stud in Philly.

Sadly, the idea that they have some how bungled the QB position is completely dependent on Geno Smith not sucking. Which is not a guarantee.

I still want to see Albert blocking for Geno in 2014, but there is a very real possibility that he sucks, and we have to at least admit that when evaluating these moves. I don't think he WILL suck, mind you, but it's possible.

If anything Houston is better suited to make a temp move to ILB. He's much better in coverage and plays a far more physical game. He's flat out stronger up top...

If they are absolutely fixated on drafting a T then this makes the most sense....even though it still sucks ass.
