Upon further review of 2013...

.. would trading for Tony Gonzalez made a difference?

Say KC traded a 2014 4th (D'Anthony Thomas' spot), a 2015 conditional pick anywhere from 2nd-6th round and Sean McGrath (for sake of example.. substitute him for any player of value that could be traded under the cap).

If that's the asking price, do the Chiefs win more games with him than do without him or is there no difference? Is the hypothetical cost of two picks and a "replacement" level player worth it?

Discus.

Edit 2: For sake of example, Tony would be dealt during Atlanta's bye week, which was Week Six. KC's schedule from that week onward:
vs. OAK
vs. HOU
vs. CLE
at BUF
BYE
at DEN
vs. SD
vs. DEN
at WSH
at OAK
vs. IND
at SD

Really, the only way it would've affected the Chiefs' fortune in 2013 would have been if Gonzalez's presence influenced wins vs. San Diego and versus Denver. That would've put the Chiefs atop the division going into Week 16 versus the Colts assuming they take care of business against Oakland and Washington. A win against the Colts they all but lock up the #1 seed.

If San Diego doesn't sweep KC, they likely go 8-8 at best and are down to tiebreakers against Pittsburgh to get in the playoffs. So they're probably out, Pittsburgh is in and has to play the Bengals on the road while Peyton gets to play another postseason game in Indianapolis.

From there it's all conjecture, but there's a slight chance the Chiefs would've drawn the Steelers, whom they would've matched up better than the Bengals IMO, and therefore a good chance of winning a postseason game in 20 years. From there they'd likely host Denver, if not them then New England or an outside chance of playing the Colts a second time at Arrowhead.

We wouldn't have won a Super Bowl with him so ultimately it wouldn't have been worth it.
Agreed. Andy Reid played a frustratingly conservative game plan to protect the lead because… well, he's Andy Reid. Within that frustrating game plan, the Chiefs could have used a big target even if that meant just getting 2 or 3 more first downs. That seems really small, but 2 or 3 first downs would have burned a lot of clock, which makes a big difference in a game where the other team is behind by that much.

Can he cover or rush the passer? 9 sacks in the 2nd half helps tell the tale.

Think of all the titles we would have won if we had Tony G from 1997 to 2009........

oh wait......

Now if that's the game you want to play then think about how things would've been different had they traded him after Vermeil retired.

He was a great player, good reciever...etc.....But TEs are not "difference makers" when it comes to winning titles.

Of course. But is it impossible to think KC could of wound up with an extra 2nd rounder in 2006 (Greg Jennings... MJD... Roman Harper.. Marcus McNeil) along with maybe a 4th (Jahri Evans.. Brandon Marshall.. Dumervil) or any permutations you can come up with.

Hah.

Yeah, we could have gotten one of those Pro Bowlers or All-Pros.

.. But more likely we would have gotten another Tank Tyler and Alex Magee.
