Goddamn clay how is it POSSIBLE gaining the most yards per pass attempt could be a bad thing.

Should we include his kicker breaking the club scoring record during his magical 2011 season?

This is one of those arguments that falls into the "quarterbacking rating is a useless stat" category, which is something I've been saying for about as long as I can remember. Because of the emphasis placed on comp percentage and yardage, you can have stat inflation when a QB completes a high percentage of short passes. It's to me the same sort of problem you get when you rank total offense and defense based on yardage. It's a fluff stat, because winning isn't about yards, it's about points. Unless you're talking a ridiculous number of yards, like say Brees approaching 5500 in 2011, in which case it's almost a foregone conclusion that he's also responsible for a lot of TDs, since it's next to impossible to throw for that many yards without getting into the end zone. But there's, to me, no real good argument for positives around a dink-and-dunk QB.
(don't get me started on Rich Gannon...) Last edited by keg in kc; 07-09-2013 at 08:35 PM.. |

And Gannon's MVP season was a statistical aberration for him. He definitely earned it that year. Of course, that said, I'd probably count us lucky if we get Gannon production out of Alex Smith, let's say something along the lines of 3800 yards, 25 TD, 10 INT. |

I'll take wins over 300 yard games.

Throwing for 300 yards results in wins these days.
All the cool kids are doing it.

Understand this:
In my bet with Payton's Gentle Prostate, I am counting on Smith to do NOTHING but take care of the football, allowing Charles and Bowe to work their mojo. I expect Alice to once in a very blue moon pull something out of his ass besides Matt Cassel's blind luck, but I'm not holding my breath. I also fully expect our defense to take a major step forward this year under new direction, and to begin punishing teams. That...is enough to win this weak-assed division.
