Anyone else been following this story? They had a pretty graphic show on nightline about it last night.

Refusing to accept the explanation of Toyota and the federal government, hundreds of Toyota owners are in rebellion after a series of accidents caused by what they call "runaway cars."

More PhotosSafety analysts found an estimated 2000 cases in which owners of Toyota cars including Camry, Prius and Lexus, reported that their cars surged without warning up to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Toyota says the incidents are caused by floor mats becoming stuck under gas pedals, but owners say that's not what happened to them.

"I'm absolutely certain that in my situation, it was not the floor mats," Elizabeth James told ABC News. She was driving her Toyota Prius outside Denver, CO when she says it suddenly shot up to 90 miles an hour, even though her foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal.

"I kept going faster and faster," James said. "And all of a sudden… my foot was pressing on the brake super, super hard and I wasn't slowing down."

James and some other Toyota owners suspect the accidents have been caused by some kind of glitch in the electronic computer system used in Toyotas that controls the throttle.

We were basically discussing cars, that could potentially still be on the road.

I am trying to figure out what you are even talking about, on most of those cars, the Pinto was the only one you mentioned with a safety issue, that I recall.

To say the Vega, Chevette and others were unsafe, would be a stretch when comparing them to the Japanese crap that was being sold to us at that time.

Honda CVCC anyone? That had to be the stinkingest pile of shit ever released for sale to the American public.

The Vega was a poorly designed (engine) rushed response to the CVCC and Corolla.
Are you referring to the Explorer, instead of the Bronco?

That being said, none of them had problems for 5 ****ing years that were killing people, without it getting fixed, all the time we were so stupid it was just the floormats.

My dad got hit by a semi truck in his Vega and he survived, so I'm not sure deathtrap is the appropriate word for it anyway. Pile of shit would be acceptable though.

Sorry...but if you think the Chevette was safe by any standards, I'd like to get you my medical report from the injuries suffered when I got hit while driving one. Never mind the fact the little POS couldn't make it up the normal sized hill, but it was a true deathtrap in road collisions.

And the Vega, even with it's mechanical issues, was no better than the Chevette when it came to collision survival.

And, in case you forgot, the Bronco had rollover issues. Admittedly not as bad as some of the first foreign SUV's to hit this market, but it was still a problem. (And I saved the Explorer for the more "pertinent" time frame)

Volkswagen has always had issue...look at their Minivan. It may be a classic for the 'free love' generation, but it had "wind-storm rollover" written all over it.

Heck...even the Toyota Previa was a rollover problem because if it's high profile. Speaking of high profiles, what about the Chevy Astro or GMC Safari. Those have always been suspect....

The older Caravans had crosswind issues as well, the newer one I have now is lower to the ground and more aerodynamic, so far I haven't noticed any issues with it. And in reality any older vehicle without crumple zones or air bags is a death trap to some degree.
