Gotta agree with you. Gaye's family saw dollar signs, and it sets a very bad precedent for artists to create freely.

Reminds me of the CCR Fogerity case about the song, "Put me in coach... I'm ready to play..."

CCR didn't own their catalog, and John got sued by Zimm (sp?) claiming he ripped off his own song.

John was a genius. He took the stand, and proceeded to show the jury how each song was played on the guitar, and how different each song was.

The jury took less than 30 minutes to side with John- even though prior to the trial everyone was claiming he was screwed.

It sets a terrible precedent.

As for Fogerty, man, did he get screwed. He was bitter for decades about it, too. That kind of stuff was all too common in the early days of rock and roll.

Fortunately, we live in the Information Age and anyone that signs a bad publishing or record deal has only themselves to blame.

Artists points were and are a huge fleecing especially when the label still took from your cut for any promotion or other expenses.

My #1 screwjob was actually artist on artist. Michael and Paul were close friends, and he had confided to Jackson that he was lining up his assets to buy back the Beatles catalog.
Lo and behold, MJ outbid him to snake away the catalog. If I was Paul, I would have emasculated that little shit and shoved his own dick down his throat to choke on for pulling that epic of a backstab.

Eh, agree to disagree on that one. I could write a 5,000 word essay on the subject and not even get to all of the important points.

But Fogerty signed over all of his publishing rights to Fantasy, which was a terrible mistake. Grand Funk Railroad signed over the publishing to their early records to their manager.

That list is nearly endless.

I've heard Weird Al say several times he doesn't need permission, but that he asks out of courtesy. I'm sure he knows since most of his career is based on parodies.

I know Coolio got mad over Amish Paradise. Al said that his people told him Coolio was good with it and so he released the song, but Coolio wasn't. But there wasn't really anything Coolio could do about it.

That's fine, I'm sure you have your reasons or incentives for your take on it.

BTW, I expect that 5,000 words on my desk by Monday. APA or MLA style are both acceptable, and footnotes in lieu of bibliography is fine.

Honestly, **** Coolio then. Al is notoriously well known as one of the nicest, genuine, and humble guys in the industry. I don't care if you like or hate his music, the guy is a solidly good person.

I was totally shocked his last release blew up to become his most successful album to date, but I couldn't have been happier for a guy who deserves it.

I'm 99.9% on the eff Coolio train as well. But I gotta reserve a little sympathy. Dude had one big hit, and it rested partially on creating an image of a hard 'street' existence, and this 'dork' comes along and utterly deflates his spot.

Kind of like if some computer dorks remade a Slayer or Megadeth hit on toy ukuleles and toured playing it in tutus and pigtails or something.

Hip hop is a game that eats its young. Today's MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, is tomorrow's, . . . MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. It's not unreasonable to be touchy about having your 'legacy' parodied.

Back on subject. I know I am probably going against the grain here, but I don't think there was anything special about this cover at all... and I'm usually one who tries to find something positive in any artist.

Huh? That's like saying Tupac wasn't gangster rap or Nirvana wasn't grunge because someone totally unrelated to them did a comedic take on their song.

For the record, Coolio had more than one hit, but if he got a burr up his butt about this, then he's taking himself way too seriously.

Of course, these days he has no problem with "selling" his artistic integrity for a paycheck so he can just "move along!"

I wonder if Styx has recovered yet still after Cartman covered Come Sail Away?

I actually agree with you. Prince has had other "moments" that way better showcase his spectacular talent. Of course, you won't find these moments on the Internet because Prince has demanded all their removal.

I love him as an artist on an original, creative talent level, but man, Prince can act like a prissy bitch being all moody because it's a heavy flow day, sometimes.
