Pioli hit homeruns with a couple of guys, but he struck the **** out with the rest of his picks. I'll take a team hitting consistent doubles over that any day.
People who say this are people who want tackles in the first round.

Pioli liked to draft by the pound, and he wanted character guys who were part of the right 53.

Berry was not his type of player from a size/position standpoint...but he took him.

Houston was not his type of player from a character standpoint...but he took him.

Poe was a swing for the fences boom/bust guy...but he took him.

THOSE GUYS are the core of our defense.

The "solid double" picks are what get you Eric Fisher, Tyson Jackson, Jonathan Baldwin, etc. None of those guys had "potential superstar or massive bust" written all over them. They all looked like 10 year solid starters.

I'd take Marcus Cooper over any of them.

A few homeruns can make up for a lot of busts, especially when you can supplement your roster with savvy waiver moves, free agent pick ups, etc.

Zero defensive snaps. I don't know about special teams, but I doubt it. Some other defenders who barely sniffed the field were: Abdullah (4), Catapano (8), and Toribio (8).

On offense, there were several guys with very limited playing time: Hemmingway (6), Davis (5), Schwartz (3), Gray (2), and some guy named Rishaw Johnson (1), who I don't even remember being on the roster.

Catapano and Toribio are the types that would have started games for us in the past. This defense is stacked.

Rinshaw is a guard that was promoted from our practice squad

The argument being that your performance against the snaps you do have to make a play on will indicate as such. Teams will also obviously target who they think are their best match ups. The only issue would be when dealing with DBs that are all pro elite and teams simply refuse to throw at them- way less likely to happen now than 5 - 10 years ago, and you don't need a lot of statistics on a known quality like a DB that clearly unless you want to simply look at total number of snaps and see he's not giving up shit.

The argument is also made for not assigning value on every play because a mediocre DB may simply become a skewed elite DB if he plays with terrible other DBS. All of a sudden it looks like you got lock down skills when really it's just your team mate or 2 can't keep within 5 yards of their man, so why would the offense even bother when they have a honey pot to move at will.
I don't believe it's true that they don't assign grades to people away from the play. The "how we grade" section of the site indicates that they grade every player on every play. If you knock your WR to the ground at the line of scrimmage as a CB, I'm confident that you're going to get a positive grade even if the throw goes to the other side of the field. If you've got average coverage, you get a 0.0, by definition.

There are some excellent CBs getting top notch PFF grades despite the fact that teams may pick on their inferior teammates.

It's kind of amazing that Poe, as big as he is, can play as many snaps as he does. Here are the defensive leaders in terms of number of snaps:

1. Justin Houston (338)
2. Derrick O. Johnson (335)
3. Tamba Hali (335)
4. Eric Berry (334)
5. Kendrick Lewis (332)
6. Dontari Poe (321)
7. Sean Smith (319)
8. Brandon Flowers (258)
9. Akeem Jordan (171)
10. Mike Devito (170)

There have been a total of 345 total defensive snaps.

I didn't expect Jordan to be so low. He has quietly been a really solid addition.

I agree. He keeps doing positive things and I keep thinking he's DJ until I get a better look at his number.

I think he is the first guy they pull whenever they leave their base package.

I'm not sure about that. That there Brandon Siler is a pretty good tackler.
