Big Balls Get The Boot In St. Louis!
By Stephen Deere
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 04/21/2010 http://tinyurl.com/26xu3k3 ST. LOUIS -- A popular kickball league just got the boot from Tower Grove Park. Park Director John Karel said members of the BigBalls Kickball League drew frequent complaints of public urination, drinking and nudity. The league has played at the park since 2007 and has 2,500 participants. Things came to a head this past weekend when one BigBalls member cursed out a park ranger and another drove a dune buggy-type vehicle onto the fields, Karel said. "It's a drinking club," Karel said. "It's not a kickball league." The league allows drinking during games and many of the teams have sexually suggestive names and logos. Karel this week sent the league a letter revoking its permit to hold games in the park. There are four kickball leagues that play in Tower Grove Park. "The overall condition of very loud, raucous behavior, lewd profane language, disrespect for rangers, public nudity, and public intoxication continue unabated," Karel wrote in the letter. League President Ted McClusky said the events Karel referred to were isolated and that the league had worked with the park in the past to resolve problems. McClusky said the league immediately expelled the member who cursed at the park ranger. “I'd like to deny that there was a pattern of trouble,” he said. McClusky said he is looking for a park in St. Louis County were the 2,500 members of BigBalls can play. He said park officials have told him they are refunding the league's permit fee of roughly $4,500. |
