Gaming and HTPC opinions
Found this at Best Buy tonight for $589 in store and $529 online. It does need a graphics card put in it though.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+...&skuId=9698918 I know I can probably build something comparable but this will already have Windows on it instead of me having to drop another bill for that. Opinions? EDIT Or this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...t=Combo.415721 Last edited by 007; 06-25-2010 at 10:35 PM.. |

You would still need a better gfx card for the newegg one too. The ATi HD48xx series are dirt cheap now so it would be worth looking into.

You could also wait for back to school, to save a few more bucks if you do not need it right away..

one thing i am noticing about the retail models is that the power supplies are crap. Bare minimum for what the PC needs. If I add a graphics card to any of them I will have to change out the power supply too.
Looks like building it will be my only option.

I would go with something like this:
Thermaltake Armor A90 Black Steel / Plastic Gaming ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case VL98521W2U w/ 850W W0319RU Modular Power Supply 850W Modular power supply SLI& Dual Core CPU Ready $149.99 A great case with a honkin 850w PSU, so when your card becomes a little slow for the games, you can either double up or have enough wattage for the biggest and brightest. G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK $99.99 AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX + GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard + Free game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. $289.99 GIGABYTE GV-R485ZL-512H Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $99.99 Total $644.00 before OS. Which, if you went with the original deal, plus a 500W PSU and a ATi HD4850, would still put you in the $600+ range. You could probably bring the price down more with a different mobo/CPU combo. EDIT** Forgot the hard drive, which would be another $50-$75 depending on how much capacity you want. |

nah, that is more powerful than I need and will exceed my budget by nearly $150 or more after adding the HDD, DVD ROM and shipping.

Damnit!!! My order just shipped and now one of the products in my order has a promo code for $30 off. Just my luck.
EDIT WOW!!!! I sent an email asking Newegg if they would be willing to consider adding the new promo code to my order for that $30 fully expecting them to say they wouldn't. Instead I got this email from them.... Quote:
