2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I'd pick Escobar and Perez as 2 players that have the potential to be superstars at their positions

I agree. I don't care much about the errors because some of them are throws.

He robs more players of singles anyway.

When you go all effort like Escobar does on balls most guys can't even get to sometimes there will be an error. That error brings his fielding percentage down when in fact most other ss's wouldn't have even been able to field the ball. Guys with great range can be punished for it if the throw isn't perfect after an amazing play while joe blow ss never got the chance to field it all and never had the chance for an out to be recorded or error. But Escobar makes the play and records outs that joe blow ss can't make in his dreams more often than not.

Anyone think Jeter could reach the balls Escobar does and mostly gets outs on?

Jeter might have less errors and start the All-Star game because he never had the chance to be great on a play to start with. Of course he also drops popups.

I think Moose's play next to him has thrown him off at times this year. I don't think he has probably ever given ground to a third baseman, and Moose has been good enough to cause that when balls are hit to Alcides right. It's not a problem on the other side since most of our 2nd baseman are quite a bit below average. Getz is probably the closest to being average.

I agree. Having two elite defenders on the left side of the infield is a good "problem" to have.

I wondered about that too, if the coaches have adjusted him to cheat more to his left. Seems like they move the infield around quite a bit this year

You may be right... but I really think the biggest obstacle the Royals still face might be that they have to grossly overpay for guys to get them to even consider coming to KC. In DM's tenure they have shown willingness to be competitive financially for free agents they really want... but it's never enough unless they overpay like they did for Meche and Guillen.

OMG, I almost had a heart attack when I saw this headline on the MLB site:

"Royals prospect Myers lifts PCL in Triple-A ASG"

I thought PCL was ACL and that it happened in the AAA All-Star Game until I read it again.

So, as a side note, Hosmer has been quietly productive as of late. Since June:
121 at bats
33 hits
12 walks
.273 batting avg
.338 obp
7 doubles
3 home runs

Once he shortens his swing again and shrinks his strike zone, I think he can realistically be back where he was in September 2010 in terms of production. Hopefully he got some quality one-on-one time with a batting coach during the break.

Am thinking about the off-season with the rumors that we look to be buyers headed into next year.

I really would love to make a run at Greinke. Marcum is plan B.

Greinke's probably going to fetch north of $125 million for 6 years. Pay him. He likes Kansas City, and the pieces are now in place to field a consistently competitive team for the duration of his contract.

Perez, Hosmer, Escobar, Moose, Gordon, Myers, Cain, and Butler? Wow.

I'd also like to make a run at Maicer Izturis of the Angels. He would be a solid 2B option while Colon develops.
