Marvel unviels their next four projects

Marvel Unveils CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ANT-MAN

Saturday’s Hall H panel for Marvel at Comic-Con was billed as Iron Man 3, but from previous experience we all knew to expect more goodies from Marvel Studios than just IM3. We were right, as the studio announced full, intriguing titles for Thor 2 and Captain America 2, confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy (including which characters will appear), and revealed test footage for Ant-Man with a surprise appearance by Edgar Wright.

Hit the jump for my full recap of this “update” portion of the Marvel panel. [Update: We've updated the article with concept art for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie as well as logos for all the upcoming Marvel films]

Chris-Hemsworth-Thor 2 the dark worldFeige opened the panel by saying that they’re working on four movies in active development. The first is Iron Man 3, hitting theaters on May 3rd, 2013. He then went on to reveal titles for two previously known sequels, and confirmed another property that we’d heard rumblings of in the past few weeks.

Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013)
Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014)

For fans of the comics, the subtitle “The Winter Soldier” should provide a hint as to where the Captain America sequel will go. The title is a reference to a comics storyline that will find Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) taking an integral role.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-movieFeige added that Zachary Levi has been confirmed as the character of Fandrel in the Thor sequel, and revealed the team that will be unleashed for Guardians of the Galaxy:

StarLord
Drax the Destroyer
Rocket Raccoon
Groot
Gamora

In a fantastic surprise, Feige then introduced Edgar Wright to talk about Ant-Man. Wright had been tweeting about being in London for the past few days in an effort to throw fans off, but he came out to a very warm reception.

“I’m taking the Terrence Malick approach to superheroes,” said Wright referring to the long road of development on Ant-Man.
Wright and Joe Cornish wrote two more drafts of the script last year, but they’ve been done for quite a while.

ant-man-movie-logoThey then revealed test footage that Wright shot for Ant-Man, after Wright toyed for a bit with the audience saying they wouldn’t really want to see a clip of stuff with wires and blue screens in it. It’s completely unfinished since they shot it two weeks ago, but they showed the footage anyway because Marvel absolutely owns Comic-Con.

The footage opened with Ant-Man sitting on a ledge in an air conditioning vent that lead to a hallway guarded by two agents. The costume was pretty metallic looking, and he snuck through the vent hole and started running down the hallway. He morphed to normal size, shocking the guards, then morphed back down to ant size and kept running. Still in “ant size” he leapt up and punched one of the guys in the face, knocking the spit out of him, then he ran and attacked the other guard.

The footage was obviously rough, but I thought the big/small effects worked great. Wright found a way to make Ant-Man’s power work in a cool and useful way on screen, while still allowing room for the playful tone that he does so well. While I was hoping we’d see someone like Simon Pegg play the role just for fun in the test footage, the actor was wearing the Ant-Man helmet the entire time so we never saw his face. The lights then came back up.

“I’ve been doing one second of that for the last six years,” quipped Wright
Wright confirmed that the costume seen in the test footage will most likely be what makes the final film. He described it as a mix between the Silver Age and contemporary Ant-Man, adding “Ant-Man will kick your ass one inch at a time.”
Wright said there’s no casting to announce, but “revealed” that Ant-Man has been here in Hall H all day, pulling out an Ant-Man title card and putting it on the table next to him.

Wright then left the stage to make way for the Iron Man 3 panel, but these bits of news from Marvel were met with wild applause from the audience. Hit the comments to discuss the goings-on from today’s Marvel panel, and read Matt’s recap of Iron Man 3 right here. [Update: Simon Pegg tweeted that he, Nick Frost, and Wright start filming The World's End in 10 weeks, then Wright will film Ant-Man sometime next year.]

Shrug.

Again, I'm just offering an observation, one that Marvel comics clearly endorses (although Marvel cinema currently does not).

I'm not suggesting specific changes, because I'm not a writer or an artist.

Man, I looooove Blue Marvel. Outstanding character, tremendous power.

Marvel has so many Superman wanna-bes, they might as well give one of them a movie.

My first vote is for Sentry, but Blue Marvel's a great character too.

Since we're talking about it, there's lots of interesting stuff to read about on the subject, and why Marvel is getting increasingly sensitive to it:

Quote:
Why do superheroes' race and gender matter?

Comics, like journalism, politics, entertainment, tech, and a whole bunch of other industries, has a serious diversity problem. "There’s this pervasive notion that white male is the, like, the basic model human and anything NOT white male is a variant edition," Kelly Sue DeConnick, the writer behind Captain Marvel, told me. She says comics creators and people working in the creative field have had to to fight for their characters who don't fit into that "basic model human" mold:
The further people get from Basic Model Human, the easier it is to tread on their rights. The more "other," the more alien. Your tribe versus my tribe. And for the people in margins — Junot Diaz has articulated it far better than I ever will. "If you want to make a human being into a monster," he says, "deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves."
DeConnick has been one of Marvel's most vocal writers when it comes to gender and race in its comic books. She played a big part in the revamping of Carol Danvers, who was originally known as Ms. Marvel and notable mostly for her skimpy outfit (a high-cut bodysuit with a ribbon for a belt). Since DeConnick has taken over, Danvers is now Captain Marvel and traded in her outfit for a more modest space pilot uniform.

"When we deny women and girls representation, we put them in ever smaller boxes," she wrote. "And when we limit their potential, we limit the potential of our culture as a whole. When we limit the contributions of half our society, we cut our potential in two."

She added, "If superheroes are meant to reflect the best of us, they should reflect the best of all of us, especially as that message can become confusing, and we can internalize the idea that heterosexual white males are the best of us."

Jesus, no. What is the big ****ing deal with looking like the character? Decent actor? I want someone who is great. Sorry. Looks don't come anywhere close to being as important as talent. Robert Downey Jr. was too old and really didn't resemble Tony Stark to much. Probably the best comic book character casting of all time. Heath Ledger didn't have a single douchey head shot that looked like the Joker, but he ****ing destroyed the part. This match an actor to the look of the comics thing is so ridiculous and has been shown to be worthless time and time again. It goes like this:

1. Write a good script with a strong understanding of the source material.

2. Get a really good actor.

3. Profit.

By the way, even if I gave a shit, Patrick Dempsey doesn't look a damn bit like Dr. Strange other than his graying hair.

Sorry to rant, but this is just something that has bothered me for years.

I also don't get people caring about race. Gender is a little different, since I think it has a more fundamental effect on the character. I'm for women being more represented, but for instance...

There was a movement to make Donald Glover Spider-man once upon a time. I would have been fine with that because I am a fan of his and I don't care if Spidey is black. If the movement was to cast, I don't know, Kristin Bell or Shailene Woodley or something, I might have taken issue with it because a lot of the character is defined by his relationships which are in turn affected by his gender. It just kind of depends on what is intrinsic to the character. I think a lot of people get too bogged down in how a certain character has been portrayed to the point that they think it can't be different.

Look at Daniel Craig as Bond. People flipped out that he was blonde (even though Bond is blonde in the books). Once the movie came out, suddenly everyone loved him cause it DIDN'T ****ING MATTER. And yet, people don't remember that. They just want the actor to look like the cartoon.

Umm, right. So Downey did not look like Stark, and somehow Dempsey does not look like Strange. What are you smoking? Both of those actors look like said comic hero.

All of the actors mentioned loved the characters. If you do not like Dempsey, that is fine. But, he is a decent actor, loves Dr. Strange and looks the part. Maybe with your vision Melissa McCarthy looks closer?

They can work on it going in the future like they are doing in the comics with adding more diverse characters. Like Morales for spiderman. And Falcon is slated to become the next Capt. America. Capt. Marvel is a woman now.

There should be a black panther movie. He is a great character. Especially if Elba is the actor. This is the only travesty so far.

As for Black Widow, no. Tell me, is it going to be a Bond type movie? She is a role player. Marvel has horrible females outside of the xmen that could carry a movie by themselves. And fox has ruined that with strictly group movies. To which outside of the lovefest with wolverine was heavy on jean grey and mystique. You can stick the new Capt. Marvel here as stand alone female. But how are you going to get women to see the movie? Also, a shehulk would be great, but not sure how they would go about it.

Electra and Catwoman have proven sex does not sell movies on its own. Movies were utter garbage. Story and acting. These two movies set back the chances, it will literally take a work of masterpiece to jumpstart it.

A proper Storm movie would be good, but Fox owns that, so it would be shit.
Wonder Woman would also be great, but DC is trying to rush introductions to compete with Marvel.

They are having Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have her own series. If it goes well, it might open for more female characters to get their own shows.

But forcing would be the stupidest thing possible. It would hurt ticket sales.
