New CBS reality show to feature celebrities trading places with the regular scum who share their names

by Sean O'Neal October 25, 2010
Now that reality television is shying away from the sort of regular people empowerment that attracts sociopaths and murderers, the next wave seems to be stroking the egos of sadly under-stroked celebrities—shows like I Get That A Lot and Undercover Karaoke, where famous stars go out and mingle with the non-famous, then reveal to the rabble who they really are and bask in the adulation firsthand. CBS’ in-development series The Same Name follows a similar “he who walks among you” premise, but also brings in the power-shift of Undercover Boss, matching celebrities with ordinary people who share, duh, the same name and having them trade lives for a little while. Thus the regular person will get a temporary reward for always having to endure the smartassed comments, e-mails, and phone calls from folks trying to track down a celebrity and who are under the delusion that, for some reason, Justin Bieber might have a listed phone number in Jacksonville, Florida, while the famous person feigns interest in how their non-famous name doppelganger lives while still getting accorded the properly awed treatment which their status demands. (By the way, I’m fully expecting to hear from the network so I can swap places with Clarissa Explains It All actor Sean O’Neal, or maybe just punch him in the face for all the e-mails and phone calls I’ve received on his behalf over the past 19 years.)

Have you seen any of the Pawn show imitators? Hardcore Pawn (which i find hilarious in its own way) There are also some knockoffs ive seen with women and on SyFy with people finding old Entertainment related collectables.

I watched an episode of that Truckstop Missouri show, but I just can't get over the "**** I'm from there" embarrassment factor.

Yeah, the shit that is about the personalities is ****ing shit. I do like top shot and top chef, but it is probably more about the skills than the "drama".

Yea, it is...but i think its pretty funny....even if it does sort of exploit the poor and uneducated. It also doesnt seem as "scripted" as other reality shows. But who really knows..

I consider a show that exhibits a skill as educational rather then normal reality TV.

This. Anything that involves a skill or a business (especially an unusual or tough one) is interesting. I enjoy or have enjoyed "Deadliest Catch", "Ice Road Truckers", "Auction Kings", "Hollywood Treasure"... hell, they even aired some new one last week about a Missouri truck stop, and I found that interesting. Even "Parking Wars" is interesting (mainly because I love watching the idiots freak out about having their car impounded, LOL).

But "celebrity"-based reality, IMO, is a whole 'nother ball of stupid wax. The Kardashians, Jersey Shore, Big Brother, anything about clothing and cooking... not interested.

Don't know why it's called Reality TV (as far as the main networks go ABC, FOX, CBS etc)....there are directors, producers, and writers that pretty much run everything and anything. Just because there are some hidden cameras doesn't make it reality TV.

This.

I joked to my wife last night that the writers for her reeruned Reality Shows are more creative then the writers of Falling Skies.

All I will say is that it is the same as a singer. Even though many here do know my name I ask that they still keep it to themselves.

Thanks.

Agree. But there are a few good ones. Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch, come to mind.

Pawn Stars is probably fake on some level. (how many expert buddies can one guy have?) but I kinda like it anyway.
