*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Unfortunately, that's the way stretched skin is. Only so much you can do (outside surgery).

Unfortunately, if there were a nutrient or combination of nutrients that prevented muscle soreness, everyone would know about it. It would be awesome. But, rest, hydration and stretching is about all you can really do, short of steroids. Getting old sucks, man.
I figure doing yoga is like any exercise and there will be some recovery time after you do it. I could see doing a few yoga stretches as a warm up I guess but I already have what I think is a good routine. If I were going to start doing yoga though I wouldn't start it now I'd start it the winter.

And yes I do need recovery time from golf if I hit very many balls. If I go hit 50balls it's no big deal but if I hit 200 balls then my body isn't ready to actually play well until the 3rd day after. I wish I would have known that when I was younger because I always over trained and then when it was tournament time my body wasn't recovered enough for all my work to show up. Of course I didn't get proper rest and nutrition either. I'd work at golf all day and then run wild all night.

Yoga is as hard or easy as you want to make it. You shouldn't need significant recovery time from yoga.

I have a question regarding Planet Fitness. Are the things I've been hearing about it true? If so, how can they call themselves a gym?

They have a pretty well deserved bad reputation, but don't insult people who go to them. It's not nice.

We were at a dinner party one night, and a bunch of the people were members of PF. My wife, who is pretty crazy fit, started talking about gyms and said, "NewChief says that PF is called Planet Fatness in the workout world." I'm kicking her under the table, but she just keeps on going on about the lunk alarm and pizza parties and shit like that. Thank god no one there did Curves, because she probably would have spilled what I say about that as well. Sometimes she's not real good with people, heh.

No grunting and/or dropping weights. That is true.

Idk. I've never had a problem with that stuff.

They do need more and heavier free weights though.

The pizza thing is curious to me. Personally, I love it. I eat pizza all the time and I'm looking to gain weight so they're basically supplying me with a free meal once a month.

It is always funny to see the people come from doing 45 minutes worth of cardio and grab a slice on the way out, though. They have no idea they basically just negated their entire workout. ****ing idiots.

My gym throws alcohol parties all the time, so I can't really dog on the pizza deal after tossing back a few beers at the gym post happy hour workout.

I've never heard of a gym doing that, either. Is it like cheat night or something?

That's what I don't get. I can understand serving healthy carbs for people who might have just done weight training, or something of the like. But pizza? Bagels with cream cheese? I just don't get why they'd even offer people stuff like that.

Not really. It's just a really social gym in our downtown entertainment district. Usually they do it on a Friday afternoon as sort of a happy hour. Drop by the gym and have a drink before heading on to another bar.

They also sponsor a lot of different races that end in their parking lot, so they have booze for those a lot of times.

It's a social crowd at the gym who are going to drink anyway, so they just provide drinks on occasion if folks want to sit around and shoot the shit for a bit after working out or come back and have a drink before going out for the night.
