50 Beers to Try Before You Die

Thought the beer snobs here might like this article (and probably critique the hell out of it).

http://www.wisdeo.com/articles/view_post/2984
(CBS) You've heard of "100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"?

How about 50 to try before you die?!
Spoiler!

Damn, congrats.

Still have about half a case of last year's BCS, will probably make it until the new stuff comes out.

I know November doesn't scream "come visit Chicago", but if you're a barrel aged stout lover, the week of Thanksgiving in Chicago is hard to beat. Most good beer bars around the city will tap all of the current year BCBS variants before they're released, plus a bunch of vintage batches like vanilla rye. Then you have the Black Friday release which goes well into the weekend. Plus, all the other breweries around the Great Lakes region that roll out their BA stouts, some just as good imo, as the Goose barrel program has spawned a ton of other brewers in the area. It's a plethora of riches. Honestly, I feel a tad guilty I don't love BA stouts as much as I should.

Yeah, that would be amazing..... they apparently had the regular stuff on tap here last year.

I like BBQ, but I wouldn't call it a great bourbon barrel beer (or maybe it is for a quad)... and IMO it doesn't get much better with age like most bourbon stouts.

- BCS - Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, released on Black Friday ( ).. it used to border on too boozy to drink right away (compared to how much better it was 6-8 months later), but in the past couple years it seems like they've been aging it longer before release. Either way, buy two... drink one soon, forget about the other for 8+ months.

- ODell Jolly Russian.... rum barrels, actually, but is right up there with BCS, and I've found it in Phoenix on multiple occasions.

- Any bourbon barrel aged stout from Ballast Point

- Modern Times Monsters' Park Aged In Bourbon Barrels... I haven't had the bourbon variety, but Monster's Park is amazing (and $33)

- KBS - Founders Kentucky Bourbon Stout.... I don't go out of my way to buy it, but it's really popular and I found it in Phoenix several months ago.

- New Holland Dragon’s Milk.... not sure if they distribute in AZ... some years are significantly better than others, but when it's good, it's really ****ing good. And their reserve stuff is expensive, but even better.

- Epic Big Bad Baptist.... I've only had it once in LA and haven't seen it in Phoenix, but it was pretty great. Apparently a place called Magnum's Speakeasy in Phoenix has it, but a name like that scares me a little.

- Evil Twin Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Biscotti Break... another rarity, saw it once in KC. Think I've seen Evil Twin around here, but not that one.

Damn, I was thinking so hard about bourbon stouts, I completely forgot about dinner... my carne asada is now closer to beef jerky...... enjoy, asshole!

I'll keep these in mind. I did just acquire some more nice bottles of bourbon though and I really just need to start drinking those.

I was supposed to try BCS on a meetup date with a CP member but he never showed. This also seems hard to find here in AZ?

He might have had second thoughts after seeing a pic of a Corona bottle... just a guess though.

There was so much BCS up here, I didn't bother looking for it in Phoenix... it probably does go quickly down there, you might have to look for it Thanksgiving weekend or just get it here. It was a pain in the ass in KC... liquor stores would limit people to one 12oz bottle, and going out on Black Friday made it worse.

Drinking stouts when it's hot out doesn't bother me like it does a lot of people.... might be time for an IPA at 110 though.

Some good recommendations here. One note: KBS is Kentucky Breakfast Stout (not to be confused with Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout), which has coffee, as well. BCBS is a gold standard for BBA stouts, at least to my palate, but a ton of great options out there.

Some of my favorites, not mentioned above (non-stouts noted):

Firestone Walker Parabola
Firestone Walker Sucaba (BA Barleywine)
Firestone Walker Helldorado (BA Blonde Barleywine)
Liftbridge BA Silhouette
Epic Big Bad Baptista
Founders Backwoods Bastard (BA Scotch Ale)
Oskar Blues BA Ten Fidy
Prairie Artisan Ales BA Bomb!
Lagunitas High West-ified
Dark Horse BBA Plead the 5th
Freemont Dark Star
Freemont Abominable
Hoppin Frog BA BORIS/DORIS
Perennial BA Sump

There are a bunch I'm forgetting, but there's a start.

I have a weak beer palate, to be honest. I don't really care for IPAs either (maybe I'm gay?).

I like Hefs, porters, stouts, red/brown ales, sours.

Have you had Blueberry Spaceship Box from Superstition Meadery up there yet? Local place is finally carrying it consistently down the street from the house. $10 for a 10oz pour and worth every penny.

D'oh... and now that I think of it, it was the coffee KBS that I bought here a while back.

Parabola is excellent, haven't seen it in probably 5 years though. The regular Bomb! is pretty good, haven't seen the bourbon one.

BCS Coffee is amazing as well, but I haven't seen that one in ~5 years either.

I'll probably brew some sort of coffee stout soon.... easy to make, hard to screw up, and quite delicious.

I had Big Bad Baptist in PHX for the first time last March, but it was on tap. Epic just started distro here last month so it's fairly easily to find at a decent price. I honestly think it's one of the most enjoyable BA stouts that's ready to drink right off the shelf. I've also spotted BA Ten Fidy around PHX at the same time, which was odd thinking about drinking a BA stout when it's 90+ outside. That one is more elusive to find here.

I love getting Dragoon IPA (Tucson) when in PHX. It's a top West Coast IPA for me.
