Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

HOLY SHIT. I had originally only read about halfway through those texts when I first commented but I just finished.

Once Martin left the team Incognito legitimately seemed worried about him. He was sending texts like "r u ok" "I miss us" (that's pretty gay), "I need u buddy, I'm getting killed in the media". Incognito even opened up to him about checking himself into a mental health clinic at one point, saying if he needed anything he was there to listen.

Shit... I actually feel bad for the guy now.

Incognito got completely screwed over here by Martin and the media. Can't say I'm all that surprised considering how the other Dolphins players backed him up at the time.

Yep. When it went down and I found out who his parents were, and what they did for a living etc., I thought the same thing. I knew that his move was calculated. That's why, in part, I called Martin out from day 1. I took TONS of heat around here for doing so. Glad to see now that most I beefed it up with here have come out and said they jumped the gun on this one.

Personally, I jumped the gun on this and was apparently dead wrong... in fact, its Martin who looks like the heel now because once this really started blowing up, he stopped communicating with Incognito even after the dude basically pleads with him, as if he had no intention of setting the record straight with the media and was content letting everyone keep thinking it was RI's fault.

If it was really Richie Incognito's dad that was posting on message boards that Martin was suicidal, then that paints a different picture. Because it means that Martin isn't faking at least being upset about... something. It's possible he responded to texts because he feared the consequences of not playing along.

I don't think it's as cut and dry as just saying that Martin participated in the texting, therefore he's making this all up. Again, the parts of the story that bother me are... if it's true that players knew he was suicidal, again, I can't understand why the team thought the best solution was to "toughen him up." I think this is just a bad culture, and Incognito was a little scapegoated for it.
