Goodell: support for expanded playoffs is "tremendous"

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...is-tremendous/

Quote:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seems fully on board with adding two playoff teams.

Although the owners have not yet voted to expand the postseason to 14 teams, it sounds like just a matter of time, based on the comments Goodell made at the league meeting today.

“We had a good discussion on it on several fronts,” Goodell said. “As you know, the Competition Committee has been looking at this for a couple of years. We have discussed it in various committees, including broadcasting. We had a full discussion on the floor with the owners and other executives this week. I think there’s a tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support, but there are also things we still want to make sure we do it right. We’ve been very incremental in trying to do this, but we believe competitively it could make even our races toward the end of our season even more exciting with more teams vying for playoff positions, which is great for our fans. We still want to do some additional work, including talking with the players association. We have a scheduled meeting set for April 8. This will be one of the things we’ll probably discuss and then we’ll also have to talk to broadcast partners and there are some scheduling issues that we still need to work through.”

It seems unlikely that the league will expand the playoffs for the 2014 season. But it looks like it’s going to get done in 2015.
Every time this guy opens his mouth, Cuban looks more and more like a genius.

It will definitely make getting the best record in your conference even more important
because that will be the only bye.

Or maybe that's not as big a deal as it used to be?

The #1 seed in the AFC tends to lose more often than not.

Don't make me whip out the "13-3" stuff...the AFC just has a really bad track record.

And ironically, it's almost the exact opposite in the NFC...

Yea, I think Peter King threw up some stats that showed HFA and byes haven't mattered as much over the past 10 years.

I know in recent history we had a 7-9 team win a playoff game, and two 9-7 teams play in the Super Bowl, and one of those won it, the other came close.

Super Bowl champions will depend less on skill and more on luck.

So many injuries now. If Charles doesn't get hurt in that Indy game....who knows? It might have been us playing on Super Bowl Sunday.

hmm, this letting more teams into the playoff thing always kindve bugs me.. Letting in 2 teams more that's ok to me, but anything more than 2, I think it starts taking away from the regular season.. For a team to go 16-0 and then get knocked off by a team who got hot late, and is the #16 seed is just dumb imo.. That 16-0 team should be getting knocked off by a top 12 team, not a team that skidded there way in..

just imo not letting a whole bunch of teams in keeps the regular season competitive year-out

Goodell is not only going to send this league flying over the shark, he's going to send it into orbit where it flies over all sharks multiple times a day.

This is exactly what's been happening over the past 10 years. It's the teams that are healthy and hot at the end of December. There is nearly no reward anymore for winning a lot of games. You can basically just ignore Sept and October now. In fact a team would be better served to just take it easy the first few months of the season and rest guys. There is not a lot of difference anymore between an 8 win team or a 12 win team.
