*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

1100 calories is 1100 calories.

Hell, a Chipotle burrito is damn near 1800 calories when you load it up, and lots of people eat one of those for just one meal.
Ugh. Crap like that doesn't even sound appetizing anymore. ..lol

Nope! There's no right way or wrong way. Some people can't do the one meal a day thing. My wife can't. Gives her migraines. Personally, I find small meals WAY less satisfying, and I'm always left feeling hungry. At least by eating one meal a day, I can go to bed having felt completely satiated at least one time per day.

I absolutely understand that. However, if someone is overweight and coming from say 3500 calories a day down to 2000 or 1800, trying to eat one meal a day just sounds like a good way for them to give up.

Sorry, but this is bad advice. Stimulants aren't a good answer for anything.

I like it because I'm rarely hungry anymore. I don't like eating to get full. I like eating enough to get me by for a while. Just my preference.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

False. What are you basing this upon? There are MANY good uses for stimulants. Hell, half of what I listed are common ingredients in allergy medications and asthma medications. That alone makes your assertion false.

Then there's no reason to change what you're doing.

I'm just trying to convey the point that eating one meal a day isn't inherently "unhealthy" any more than eat 6 or 12 is, either.

And I apologize if I came across as a know-it-all or something. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just know what I now consider "one meal", so reading that just threw me off.

I gotcha.

I've been taught that having at least 25 grams of lean protein six times per day is important. Perhaps that's just my trainer's way of making sure I get what I need. In a way, it's just what I've gotten used to. Plus, it breaks up my day at work when I eat every few hours.

As Silock said, it's really a result of preference. I'm the type of eater that, once I get started, I want to EAT. Like, really freaking EAT. If I have a "little snack" like a few almonds or something, I'll end up eating 30 almonds. If I have a couple of carrots, I'll eat 10. I've always been like that, but I've always been very active and been blessed with a good metabolism. As I've gotten older, it's harder to keep off the weight. Fasting works VERY well for me as a way to control calories without having to control portions (which I find more challenging than just not eating).

I have a buddy who I work with who is a former NFL player and still looks like a power lifter. Just absolutely huge. Probably 6'6" and weights, I bet, close to 300 lbs... and is solid muscle. Just a huge NFL lineman build.

He's always astounded when we eat together, because I absolutely bury him in portions and eat WAY more than he does (and I look like a pretty skinny guy at 6'2" 190 lbs). One difference is that he's snacked (and his snacks are something to behold) throughout the day, while I haven't eaten anything.
