KC @ PITT Primer
This game rivals the Donk game in terms of “underdogness”. While the Steelers are 1-3, they’re still the defending SB champs and loaded with talent. The onus will yet again be on the Chiefs D to keep them in the game, and the O will have to pull some magic out of its butt to score on the Steeler’s tough defense. Our injury list looks like the inpatient roster at a MASH unit. Some stats:
KC Score O – 20 ppg (13) vs PITT Score D – 19 ppg (13)…PITT adv w/homefield KC Rush O – 106 ypg (18) vs PITT Rush D – 89 ypg (10)...PITT adv KC Pass O – 194 ypg (20) vs PITT Pass D – 218 ypg (22)...wash w/homefield PITT Score O – 15 ppg (27) vs KC Score D – 13 ppg (6)... KC adv PITT Rush O – 103 ypg (22) vs KC Rush D – 107 ypg (18)...wash PITT Pass O – 179 ypg (24) vs KC Pass D – 148 ypg (4)… KC adv Turnovers: PITT – 7 INTs & 3 fumbles in 4 games (-3) KC – 1 INT & 6 fumbles in 4 games (0) BIG Homefield Advantage: STEELERS PITT Key Players (against Phins, Jags, Bengals, & Chargers): QB Roethlesberger – 569 yds, 54% comp., 0 TDs, 7 INTs RB Parker – 325 yds, 3.8 ypc, 3 TDs LB Foote – 21 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 FF LB Haggans – 22 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF Key PITT injuries: LB Harrison (ankle) – Q. Steeler’s last game: After going up 10-0, the Chargers’ tenacious D shut Roethlesberger down and dominated the Steelers in a game that wasn’t as close as the score. KC Key Players (against Bengals, Donks, 49ers, and Cards): QB Huard – 769 yds, 70% comp., 5 TDs, 0 INTs RB Johnson – 331 yds, 3.7 ypc, 2 TDs DEs Allen & Hali, secondary and LBs P Colquitt Key KC injuries (besides Green): RB Bennett (hammy) – O, WR Hall (hip) – Q, LT Turley (back) – Q, CB Sapp (knee) – O, OT Svitek (knee) - O. Chiefs’ last game: fueled by the defense, the Chiefs came from behind against a surprisingly dominating Cards performance and won by a FG in AZ. Colquitt must shape a long playing field for the Steelers’ O. Chiefs could really use a score by Hall/Webb, because opposing teams are stacking the box to neutralize our run game with great success. Somehow, the O-line MUST establish a semblance of a running game against a stifling PITT run D. Having said all that, this game is winnable for the Chiefs. |

We can't afford turnovers in this game. I hope we can hang onto the ball and force Big Ben to make some mistakes.
Good primer, thanks for the stats.

We will have to bring it. And I mean BRING it. They are 1-3. Their playoff hopes, while it is just week 6, are slim because of the Bengals and Ravens impressive seasons' so far. We must play mistake free football, and just hope to win it at the end, as much as it pains me to say those Marty/Herm words. Look for a defensive struggle. First team to 10 points wins.
Of course, now that I say that, watch it be a shoot-out.

what needs to happen:
1) damon huard throws the ball downfield with success... 2) larry johnson runs the ball with more authority... 3) ben rothlisberger continues to play like crap... 4) no chiefs turnovers... if we manage any 3 of the 4 keys above I think we win... |

I think we will be lucky to see LJ play in this game, that could change our entire strategy. With either limited or no time we will have to significantly alter the game style.

Great post to the OP.
The key to this entire game is not on Pitt. It is the Chiefs offensive line. Pitts offense can be lethal, but Ben has been off center lately, and I think we can take advantage of that. The Chiefs run D is excellent, and our guys swarm to the ball on every play. Pitts recievers while talented are not the fastest guys on the planet, so coverage shouldn't be a problem. The problem will come with our O-Line. Pitt is an edge rushing team, and sadly that is where we are not just bad, but pathetic. We can't expect our D to hold Pitt to no points, but if we don't get a decent pass block on the outside, we will be held to no points. On top of that, as mentioned already in this thread, the O-Line needs to step up the run blocking too. Which will be nye impossible against Pitts rush defense. LJ is in for a long day, hope he is well rested and rembers to tuck that ball high and tight. The game plan should be a traditional Herm game plan, and run that damn ball. Even if we are not getting a lot of yards, the Chiefs need to establish LJ as a threat early, if they can do that, then I think we could have a chance. But if Herm and Solari panick like last week, we are doomed. |

I wouldn't be shocked if there are as many defensive TD's in the game as offensive TD's. Big Ben has been playing poorly and with all the screens and quick passes the Chiefs have been throwing it's just a matter of time before some DB's jump them for a quick 6.

If he doesnt start holding on to the ball and running like we know he can! Then we will quickly go from Stud to Dud.... He doesnt seem to be running with the same passion and intensity as last year. What has happened to LJ? |
